Ferry Italy-Croatia

Just looking for advice on a cheap ferry route from Italy to Croatia. We have not decided on a place to stay in either country so we are flexible. Though I will say we will not be in the north of Italy, and we are leaning towards staying in Split in Croatia. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

Oh and I guess it's worth it to ask for recommendations for where to stay in each country. Want to stay somewhere on the south east coast in Italy, and anywhere really in Croatia. We plan about 5 days in each country, staying in just one city in each. Have done enough of the 2 days here, 3 days there traveling in Europe and want to just pick one nice place for each and settle in for 5 days or so. What's the best each country has to offer?!

Jadrolinjia is the name of the company that runs ferries between Italy and Croatia. They depart from Ancona to either Zadar or Split, and from Bari to Dubrovnik. Website is www.jadrolinjia.hr and it has a button to switch it to English so you can investigate all the options.
Split and Dubrovnik are both spectacular. Use Rick Steves book to read up on the differences and choose what you like.

Emiglia-Romagna Lines also have ferries running to Croatia from Cescentico and either Rimini or Ravenna.
These are passenger only.
