Ferry from Villa san Giovanni to Messina

Traveling by car to Sicily and looked into the ferry site for travel from Villa san Giovanni to Messina. Keep reading buy tickets in other places. Should I try to buy them before my trip or is there a better place along the Autostrada between Strombolli and VSG to buy them. Should I be worried about this?

No need for reservations or advance ticket purchase. There's a ferry every 20 minutes. Just buy your ticket at the departure point. Crossing only takes 20 minutes.

Crossing takes 20 minutes but loading and unloading the buses and trains can stretch that to an hour. Check with your car rental company for restrictions in taking the car to Sicily - some companies don't permit it, others may charge a big drop-off fee.

Thank you both for the advice. I read on the ferry site not to get the tickets at the terminal. Not enough parking they recommended obtaining the tickets along the autostrada. Do either of you or anyone else reading know where exactly?
I booked our car with a drop off in Palermo so I presume that is all taken care of.

No need to worry but I would recommend getting tics prior to getting there. You'll see them advertised at gas stations along the autostrada the closer you get to San Giovanni. You can also get for the return trip if needed. Just for the simple fact that if it is busy when you get there it could be a hassle. We got 'em about 40 kilometersw away and simply got in line for the boat. Took about 5 mins. San Giovanni side didn't seem too bad but the Messina side for the return trip was pretty chaotic.
