I am traveling with my family to Italy in November. After visiting Mattera, we plan to drive to Reggio di Calabria to take the ferry to Sicily. Has anyone taken this ferry? If yes, which ferry company do you recommend? Also, do you recommend getting your ferry tickets ahead of time? In advance, thank you for your help.
The shortest ferry is at Villa San Giovanni
Thank you Roberto. Have you taken the ferry before? If so which one did you take? When I looked online I found two companies. I also wasn’t sure if it was best to get tickets ahead of time.
Are you planning to take the car, presumably a rental, on the ferry? Does the rental company permit that?
From Villa San Giovanni, the company is Caronte and Tourist

From Reggio di Calabria the company is Liberty Lines

If you are taking a car, I think the only option is from Villa San Giovanni. I think Liberty Lines operates only fast hydrofoils (only passengers). Actually I’m not even sure they offer this service in November, or if it’s only available till the end of September. Check with them.
In the Spring we took the Liberty Lines ferry in the opposite direction, Messina to Reggio di Calabria. It was a passengers only ferry, no car transport. As Roberto said, you need to check the website about the schedule. Buon viaggio!
Thank you for your responses. Caronte & Tourist is our only option for a car ferry. And I double checked with our rental car company that we can bring the car on the ferry.
