Ferry from Naples to Sorrento

In early May we will be coming from Florence and going to Sorrento. I know we will need to take the train from Florence to Naples, but I see an option of a ferry from Naples to Sorrento instead of taking the regional train from Naples to Sorrento. I have looked at the ferry schedule, but how do we get from the Naples train station to the location of the ferry? Should be buy ahead or wait in case the weather is bad and the ferry doesn't go? Then we could just take the regional train.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

We took the ferry to Sorrento. We were staying in an area in Naples from which we could walk to the ferry. I would guess you would need to take a taxi to the ferry station. It isn't that far but probably would be easier.

The ferries to Sorrento are enclosed so it is not like you are sitting outside. You arrive in the harbor and then need to get up to the town itself. We took a bus.

Taxi to the ferry is easiest - there's construction (at least the past 3 years) in the area of the docks so it's crazy. When you get off the ferry you can take the bus up the hill (or walk up lots and lots of stairs). OR you can follow the signs to the elevator. It would be a good idea to ask your hotel for the best way. The elevator may not be close to the hotel, or the bus may not be. Taxis in Sorrento are extremely expensive.

If no other methods trip your trigger, just take the Civcumvesuviana to Sorrento. You'll be right THERE at Naples Centrale station where you'd need to pick it up (it's next door at Garibaldi station) with no transfer to the docks needed. For all the dire warnings, if you keep your valuables secured - as you should do on public transit anywhere at ALL in Italy - you'll be fine. The trains also run much more frequently than than the ferries.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. After reading them and doing some more research, I think we are going with the train from Naples to Sorrento. We will make sure our valuables are secure. I agree, Kathy, we are right there and so why not take advantage of that.

Cindy, you can always take ferries from Sorrento to other points around the coast; you don't need to miss out on a boat ride if you don't do it from Naples. :O)

I was debating between the Ferry and the train as well. We will be coming from Rome on the train to Naples. I found a private car for 80 euros will be the best option.
