On one of the Ferry website I was looking at re: taking a ferry from Capri to Positano, it states there is no road from from the dock area up to the town and hotels. Are there only steps? Several people in our small group have some mobility issues ..are there any options other than walking?

Positano is nothing but hills - it makes San Francisco and Lisbon look flat. It's the last place I'd want to go with mobility issues.
If the people in your party can walk down but not up, you can take the bus there. From Sorrento, get off at the first Positano stop; from Amalfi, get off at the second Positano stop. You can then walk down to the lower stop, and take the bus out of town (there's also a local town bus that goes between the stops).
If the people in your party will have difficulty walking down or up inclines, choose another town to visit.
