Ferry boats or vaporettos from Venice to airport and vice versa

Any help on the best way to get from Marco Polo Airport to the hotel ALA in Venice that is right on the water by S. Maria del Giglio dock. Or I may be doing it in reverse and going from my hotel back to the airport to catch a flight in the morning. Does anybody know the general amount of time I'll need if I have in 11 AM flight back home? From the airport it looks like you go to the aeropuerto and there's only two linesA&B, that run to Venice, but it doesn't seem like they go to that dock. I know other people on the hotel reviews, say the boat they took went right to that dock and then just walked into the hotel. Also, if I wanted to schedule from the hotel back to the airport, do I have to set that up in advance with the hotel or a ferry service? And is that chancy to catch a flight back home?

First, have you looked at this page on Hotel ALA's website that spells out how to arrive?

Second, the boat you want is part of the Alilaguna system, and is not a vaporetto. You want the Orange (Arancio) Line. It departs from the airport at a dock that you have to walk to (or ride the moving sidewalks.) Here is a link to the current Orange Line timetable.

Assuming your 11 AM flight is a non-stop international flight (ie, not to another Schengen country) I would suggest being at the airport at 8 AM. As you can see on the timetable, this means leaving the Giglio stop at 6:49 AM. If your flight is to another Schengen country, then you could depart an hour later, to arrive at the airport around 9. Though VCE is a small-ish airport, it can get crowded in the mornings with departing passengers (especially if some cruise ships are finishing their itineraries in Venice that morning.) Not possible to reserve a seat on Alilaguna, so, no, you won't reserve this before leaving. Just buy your ticket the day before and you'll be ready. If you want a water taxi (see below), then, yes, I would reserve that before the day of departure. So long as you book with somebody like motoscafivenezia, they are reliable.

I don't know what is meant by lines A and B.

The only way to go direct to the hotel's own water entrance would be by private water taxi. Think of the Alilaguna ferry as a bus, and the water taxi as, well, a taxi, as your party will be the only one's aboard (unless you find somewhere to share the ride/split the costs.) This would be quite pricey, as you can see on the hotel's webpage linked above.

You need to be careful with terms; the word “ferry” is vague and does not really apply to the public transport boats around Venice, apart from the large ferries that carry passengers and vehicles across the lagoon.

The usual transport boats are the vaporetto and the Alilaguna. Both will serve the Giglio dock. The Alilaguna company operates boats that go from the airport to various stops around Venice. The Orange line serves your stop (it is the last one so easy).

The vaporetti are the regular “water bus” transport that serve stops all over Venice and around the lagoon, but they do not go to the airport. You take a regular “land bus” from the airport to Piazzale Roma and the vaporetto from there down the Grand Canal to Giglio dock.

The price is comparable, within a euro or two. While the Alilaguna is more convenient (no transfer involved), I found it uncomfortable and unpleasant. The trip across the lagoon seems like a good idea, but the boat sits low in the water and you cannot go outside. The windows are dirty from salt spray, and the engines are noisy. But you do get a seat.

The vaporetti can be very crowded, but boarding at Piazzale Roma you will be among the first to board. The boat often fills up at the next stop, the train station. So if you choose this route, board quickly and if there are no seats outside, take a place on the rail on the opposite site of the boat, and keep it for the journey (you will stand the whole way). The mariner may direct you to place luggage in a certain spot, but if it is a small roller bag you should be able to just keep it by your feet.

Whenever you use the vaporetto, make sure you validate your ticket or pass before boarding the boat. Some stops have turnstiles so you must validate before you can go through. But the fines for boarding a boat without a validated tickets or pass are large.

Thank you for your advice and links. I will look at the hotels website, I must have overlooked it. I know of that Orange Line Boats and have read from other people that it's not too Pleasant. I do have a question, are the vaporreto and the vaporetti the same? Or does one come from the airport any other from the Piazzale Roma?

The Hotel Ala (Best Western) is in a good location. A very short walk from the vaporetto stop and impossible to miss - you have to walk right past the front door - just in front of the church, easy turn right to San Moisè and S Marco, and an easy left turn over the bridge to S Stefano and La Fenice.

Vaporetto every 9 or 10 minutes, and if you do decide on the Alilaguna - I have personally decided never again - it stops right at the same dock.

There are 3 ways to get from the airport to your hotel. The 1st is a water taxi and it is the most expensive. I understand there is now a shared water taxi system available but haven't used it so can't comment on it.

The 2nd way is the Alilaguna boat. It takes longer, you do have to "check" you baggage so you don't have control of it the entire time, and you probably will not be able to get a "non stop" line to the area of your hotel.

The 3rd way is a combination bus and vaporetto (vap.). It takes a bit longer, but that is what we do because we travel very light with just one carry on apiece. There are two bus lines that serve the airport. One is ATVO and is NOT affiliated with the vap. system. The other is ACTV and IS affiliated with the vap. system. At the airport you can get a vap. pass for various periods from 24 to 72 (or more?) hours. You can have a one way or two way bus fare added to the vap. pass. There is a good site maintained by the ACTV system that has current prices and etc.. Don't remember the url so just Google it.

If you decide on option # 3, take the # 5 ACTC bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma. Be sure and validate the vap. pass on the bus. Do not wait until you get on the vap. Also, validate the pass each time you use the vap. Then take to the vap. to the stop closest to your hotel. The # 1 vap. should stop at the dock you need. We've done option # 3 many times. Easy Peasy and cheap to boot.

There is a site called veniceforvisitors.com that has a lot of good info. that you might want to check out.
