Ferry/boat tours - Amalfi Coast

We will be staying in Sorrento for 4 nights. We would like to see the Amalfi Coast from both the road and from the water, so planning on one day taking the bus and the second day on water. We are wondering if you take the Ferry from Sorrento to Amalfi, if you would get just as much of the view as taking a tour (which to us, seems like you would). Or do people highly recommend a boat tour? We also plan to go to Capri on one of our days. Any thoughts, suggestions, boat tour recommendations? Thanks!

I can’t speak to a private boat tour, but the ferry to Amalfi is a joy. Pulling into the dock at Amalfi (and Positano, it’s on the way) was unforgettable. I think the bus view is overblown for what you have to deal with. A private tour may hug a little closer to shore, and maybe pull into some little spots, but I can’t imagine it’d be worth the extra money.

On Capri, I found the 1 hour tour around the island very enjoyable and a good value. Make sure you go up to Monte Solaro, it’s the island’s true highlight.

My only general note here is to make sure you get as early a start to your day as possible. No matter your plans, if you can beat the crowds by a couple hours it makes the region so much more enjoyable!

You can take the CitySightseeing Tour bus from Sorrento to Amalfi (or visa versa). It is a bit more of a cost, but you get a seat on the bus for sure. (The Sita buses can become quite full at times.) Then explore a bit and enjoy the town, have lunch, walk to Atrani, then take the Ferry back from Amalfi to Sorrento. If you check the Rome2rio website, I believe there are schedules and links to the times for which lines run. I am not sure when you are traveling, but if you plan on stopping in Positano, the lines waiting for the buses in high season can be long for both directions. They do run quite often, but do your homework first and know where the bus stops are and where to purchase your tickets. As an example, we were trying to get to Praiano from Positano one evening, and watched 1 bus wiz right by because it was packed, and the second could only take on about 8 out of the 30+ people waiting to get on. We decided to walk up the road (west) to the previous stop by the garden centre up the hill. We managed to get on that bus and then it was almost full, and it was only able to take on a few people at the busier stop we were previously at.

We really enjoyed the ferry rides as opposed to the buses, but that was a personal choice. The buses can be fun too!
Good luck!
