I am having a devil of a time trying to figure out ferry's for my trip. I will be taking a train from Rome to Salerno on October 18, 2012, and I would like to get the ferry to Positano but everything I see seems to indicate I may not be able to get the ferry at that time in October. Of even greater concern is making sure I can get a ferry from Positano to Capri on October 19. Does anybody know if these ferry's run at that time? Italy is supposed to be great in October, but I am beginning to worry that "low season" means it is very difficult to get around. Your help is appreciated!

The ferry from Salerno to Positano will stop running in October due to the absence of enough paying passengers at that time of year, but the exact last date is variable year to year. But you don't have to worry: if it's not running, you can easily take a SITA bus to Positano.

Thanks. The ferry should run to Capri year round, right? I cant imagine they would lack enough passengers. We are staying in Positano so we can visit Capri, so if we cant be sure of ferries we would need to revisit whether this part of the trip makes sense.

Ferries to Capri run year round from Naples & Sorrento, but tend to run from Positano only in their loosely-defined summer season. There may be private boats that will take you. Your hotel should know what's available. Worst case scenario is that you'll have to take a taxi or bus over to Sorrento (one hour) to catch one.
