Ferries - Sardinia-Livorno or Palermo-Livorno

I am hoping to add a side trip from Tuscany to other Sardinia or Sicily. Any advice about the ferries for a single woman traveling alone. Is Livorno a good starting place or would Citivecchia/Rome be better? How long is the trip: web gives either 8 hrs or 5 to Sardinia. Do the ferries operate in November, the web does not show a schedule beyond October. Any and all comments welcome..

It looks like both Livorno and Civit have ferries to both Sardinia and Palermo. Check out Grandi Navi, SNAV and Corsico Ferries. For a scheduling website that may answer on operating times, see http://www.ferryticket.gr/

Last year (May 2010) we did the overnight ferry from Livorno to Golfo Arnaci (Sardinia) It left at 11 PM and got in before 7AM. The only reason that we did the ferry is because it was cheaper to take our rental over on the ferry than it was to fly over, and get a different rental car. We left from Livorno, rather that Ciivecchia, because our last stop was the "leaning tower of Pisa." We used Aferry.com to get our tickets for Corsica Ferry. We waited in our rental car, but there was a nice terminal for others to wait in. We upgraded our cabin to a "Cruise cabin", that was more spacious. Our trip back was on Ryan Air (Caglari to Ciampino, then a "Rome Cabs" $45 limo to Fiumicino) Always check the lo-cost inter EU airlines (and Ryan air) for the trip between the mainland and any of the islands (use Whichbudget.com) Be especially aware of of luggage and other restrictions, and make sure you understand EXACTLY were the airport is that you will be flying into and out of. If I was going in November, I would fly. You also have the option of taking the train to Sicily, but we have flown and taken the train, and reccomend flying. Flying is faster, and much more convenient.
