ferries on the lakes in late October

So after 2.5 years of dreaming and wishing we are finally settling on a time to visit Italy. One of my concerns is that the lakes we want to visit will be closed to tourists in a way. I will need to rely on public transport and so will want to use the ferries to transport us on Lago Maggiore and Garda. I see on some schedules that service stops on October 4. Does anyone know if there is service on these lakes or others? We are thinking about going to Turin, Mantua, Padua, Verona, Trentino, Rovereto, Riva del Garda, Bolzano, Dolomites, Bergamo, Bresica, Verese and Milan (airport). We also will be stepping into France to visit a good friend in Menton. For the most part we are trying to avoid the most touristy places but need to be able to use the trains or buses to get around. We will be going Oct 7-29. We want to go when the weather is mild and can't go in May. Some vlogs say October is less crowded and others say it is prime season still . Any advice?
