Ferries from Sorrento to Other Amalfi Coast Towns - Fear of Heights

Hi, All -

We are going to arrive in Sorrento in September '10 for 6 days and would like to visit the other Amalfi towns. Unfortunately, we have heard the roads are quite twisty/narrow along cliffsides and my husband is very afraid of heights.

Are there ferries and hydrofoils (operational in mid September) available from Sorrento to other Amalfi towns? If so, does anyone have any advice as to how long such ferry rides are and if they are convenient? Can you go from Sorrento to Amalfi or Ravello and then return to Sorrento at night? Any advice would be really appreciated.

do not take the bus down the coast if afraid of heights!!!! very windy roads and you are way up there guess only other option is to sit behind driver so you are away from the edge and take dramamine if you can

Yes, you can go from Sorrento to Amalfi by ferry. Ravello is inland from Amalfi; you catch the local bus dockside in Amalfi for the short uphill ride to Ravello.

You can see some ferry info here:

Many prefer bonine to dramamine for motion sickness prevention; bonine doesn't make you as sleepy.

Thanks to all for your replies. Makes me feel better that at least ferries are another option in the event we don't want to traverse the Amalfi Drive.

How is the road from Naples to Sorrento?

Naples to Sorrento is pretty much urban all the way. Certainly no need to fear heights on the Autostrada. And from there on in to Sorrento are villages. That road isn't bad either. (Sorrento is not on the Amalfi Coast, but rather the northern side of the Sorrentine Penninsula.)

Safe travels.

We just returned from a few days in Sorrento and I just have a couple things that might be worth knowing:

Although Sorrento isn't on the Amalfi Coast technically, most of the town is up high above the water and the last little bit of the road there from Naples is a bit high and a bit winding, although less so than the road down the coast from Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi.

I would just caution you a little about where you're staying if heights really bother your husband. Some of the hotels cling to the cliff and lots of pools and balconies and even elevators feel like they're on the very edge of nothingness.

The road is a lot like Big Sur if you've ever done that. I too am afraid of heights but was actually OK in a private car (with a driver -- I would NEVER recommend that anyone not from there drive!) on the inside and the views are spectacular. Whatever else you do, I do NOT recommend a bus.

Ravello is way up in the hills looking down on everything and the only way to get there is to climb up some very steep and twisty roads. The other two big coast towns are accessible by water.

Have a great time. It's a beautiful part of the world!
