ferries down the Amalfi coast

I am just plain scared taking a minivan down the coast. In early October, can you take a boat/ferry to Positano & stay overnight? Do you have to walk up hundreds steps to the town? Or can you take a taxi from the port to the town if you have luggage? The same with Amalfi? Or, can you take a bus with your luggage? Thanks.

What happened to Sorrento (your previous post)?
You also haven't mentioned your mobility issues due to a troublesome foot.

can you take a boat/ferry to Positano & stay overnight?

Yes, from select towns/cities IF the seas are not too rough. Explore your options here:

How much time do you actually have in this region, where are you coming from, and what do you want to do/see there? That can determine best locations. IMHO, I don't think Positano is a great choice for someone who will have trouble getting around on foot.

We are coming from Sorrento & we are staying there for about 4 days, but I always wanted to see Positano (like so many other people), but not on a bus tour where you just get to eat lunch or something like that. I always thought maybe there was an actual town center & maybe I could stay overnight near the town center. I can do stairs, but I just have to do them slowly. My friend told me there were winding roads. One day we probably will take one of those mini van tours with some other people. But I thought I would like to stay 1 or 2 nights in Positano by ourselves. Is there a town center to stay near or should we stay down near where the boats dock, in your opinion. Or maybe we should stay in Amalfi? Or one night in each place & back to Sorrento.
Also, in your opinion, would it be good to spend a night in Capri, so as to see the town & take the boat tour around the island & see the blue grotto in case it was not good enough weather another day?
Sorry, I should not ask you all these questions. As you can see, I really don't know what to do except I do have a place in Sorrento.
I really appreciate all your help. You really have been very kind. Thanks for the ferry schedule.

Kathy,

To answer your question, we arrive in Naples October 1. Planned to take the Curreri bus to Sorrento. We are going to Pompeii & taking the boat or maybe a mini van tour down the Amalfi coast. We leave on the 9th, so we have 8 nights. We also wanted to go to Capri & maybe stay 1 or 2 nights in Positano. And that's about it.

Sorrento is a great base for both Capri or Positano/Amalfi. You can do a day trip to each city and enjoy it. There is a lot of steps in both and for 1 night it's too much hassle to be honest, not to mention how expensive hotels are in Positano and Capri. I did a semi private tour from sorrento to capri and it was one of the best days of my life. I found it on viator and it was around €100, but totally worth it! I would just do Sorrento as a base and do day trips to the places you want to go, unless you want to see Positano at night. Either way, am sure you will have a great time, but keep in mind carrying luggage in those places is not easy.

Good luck and enjoy!

If you look at some photos of Positano online, you'll see that it's built around a valley, with the majority of it uphill in any direction from the port. There is a restaurant area around the beach and port but there's not really a central square. Rather than hiring a luggage transfer service, I would visit as a day trip. If you arrive to Positano by bus, you'll be in a higher part of town, so walking would be all downhill to see some shops and then catch a ferry on the next leg.

Amalfi town is also built on hills, but the main sightseeing area is not as steep. In this case, the SITA bus stop is at the port, not higher up.

Thank you all so much. Are there any other ferry websites other than the Naples Bay one?

sdumont, note that Travelmar ferries do not service Sorrento or Capri.

Kathy,
Thank you so much again. I did not know the Bay of Naples website included all ferries. Here there are several competing companies and they will only give the website for their own ferry line. Also, perhaps you could answer my other question that I posted about the Curreri Viaggi information. I went to their website but got conflicting information from my hotel/condo owner. I emailed them too but they only answered my question about using the same ticket for different shuttle times. Thank you. for all your help.

Kathy,

I believe you are absolutely right about Positano. We decided to just stay in Sorrento & take day trips, even though I would like to see Capri & Positano at night.

Did my best with your Curreri bus post. :O)

It wouldn't hurt to reference both ferry sites as I see some discrepancies between the two for the Travelmar ferries. It's also possible that schedules might change a bit by Oct 1, and I see that not all tickets for all Travelmar ferry runs between some locations are available for online purchase.
