Ferries around the bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast

We fly to Naples on July 19th. When we land, we will stay in Ischia for several nights. Do we need to buy ferry tix ahead of time? After we leave, we are staying in Sorrento for several nights. Do we need to buy those ferry tix ahead of time?

Thanks for any info.

You can buy the tickets online, but you still have to wait in line at the ticket booth to actually pick up your tickets. We tried to buy ferry tickets to Ischia a few days ahead of time when we were in Sorrento last month, but they wouldn't sell them in advance at the ticket window (told us to just show up 20 minutes before the ferry leaves to buy tickets). We stayed on Ischia a few days and same situation there...we could only buy tickets in person the day of our departure back to Sorrento.

I also have a question about ferries around the Amalfi Coast. We plan to travel from Naples to Sorrento by train in September, then continue to our accommodation in Atrani. From watching Monday Night Travel with guide Ann Long, the ferry seems to be the best way to get there. But I've been reading on other sites that the ferries can be unreliable. The issues being described might be out of the ordinary, I'm not sure. What has been the ferry experience of others? Suggestions on a reliable way to get from Sorrento to Atrani for a reasonable price?

Thanks for any info.

There is no ferry in Atrani, you will take ferry to Amalfi then walk or cab to Atrani

Your other options from Sorrento are SITA bus or private driver

We used this company while in the area
Was 100 euros for Sorrento to Amalfi in 2019

Ferries are reliable but can’t run when weather is bad/ sea is rough.
Sorrento to Amalfi is a major route, both have large docks so those won’t be affected as easily as Positano dockings for example.
