Ferrari Museums

My husband, two adult sons and myself will be in Italy in October. They will be touring the Ferrari museums with the ticket that includes both museums and transportation between the two. The pickup location is the train station in Modena. While they visit the museums, I would like to take a cooking class.

We have two scenarios we think will work. We'd stay two, maybe three, nights either way. What do you all think?

  1. Should we stay in Bologna? The guys could take the train to Modena from there to meet the tour.

  2. Stay in Modena? My concern here is not enough to see/do. But is it more charming?

That is up to you, obviously Modena can keep you busy for a day, while Bologna, being a large city, has more to offer to the visitor. In terms of charm that is an entirely subject matter. Bologna is a large flat city with a pretty historical center, Modena is a flat small city with a pretty historical center.

For a focused Ferrari experience, staying in Modena is optimal due to its proximity to the museums in Maranello. However, if you desire a more diverse city experience with excellent transportation links, Bologna offers a broader range of attractions and is still within a reasonable distance from the museums. So, if your only focus is to visit Ferrari Museums then Modena would be a great option for you but if you want to explore more things then Bologna would surely be the better option.

If Bologna is considered the culinary center of Italy, wouldn't you have better opportunities for your cooking class there?

I would stay in Modena, it's delightful and plenty enough to see, and, yes, charming. The Duomo is historic and the streets of colorful buildings are compositions on their own. Since you are interested in food, you could just spend most of a day in the Market Albinelli https://www.mercatoalbinelli.it/en/ Bologna is great, but it's an order of magnitude bigger and thus less comfy, for me at least.

Although the October dates are not open/bookable YET, tripadvisor lists a Modena “experience” of a market shopping tour, pasta and tiramisu class (in her home), then dinner with wine for $165 person. There are probably more available as the season unfolds.
Airbnb also has ‘experiences’ on their site, if you want to deal with them.
I would inquire about what language is used, if you need to.
