Recently, you gave me support and suggestions for a 3 week Spring trip

I am thinking to add 2 days to this in order to do some birdwatching around Comacchio or the Po Delta (slightly north).
After reading about individual towns, Ferrara seems to have more appeal than Bologna for a few days and I wonder if anyone has done both? I would do a day trip to the other town.
I also think I will stay at least overnight in Ravenna to give it more time. I could rent a car from there and do my birdwatching (if I can get a place with parking outside the dreaded ZTL), or is there something north of Ravenna to consider? There are bound to be numerous condos for all the beach vacations.
Last question....mosaics at Classe...is it small enough that I can find a place to park to visit the Basillica? Or can I even park there?
Thanks in advance.
I have never been in Comacchio proper, but as a small kid, my family spent a couple of years at Lido di Spina, a nearby beach resort town. Besides the beach, I remember the huge pine groves and the equally huge mosquitoes from the nearby Po Delta Park.
Later on I spent sometime in the area near the mouth of the river Reno. It’s a Military Base Range where I did some of the live ammunition target training during basic training. Don’t go there, besides mosquitoes there are plenty of bullets flying around.
There is plenty of accommodations in the area, although August gets really busy.
Parking will not be a problem outside the ZTL or at the Basilica (plenty). I’m not into birdwatching but the Valle di Comacchio was famous for duck hunting, so I’m sure there are birds. Maybe now the place is protected since it’s a national park.
Thanks Roberto.
I will be going late April/early May...though it might be a year from now. Hopefully slightly before mosquito season.
I sometimes bird on range land here in Ottawa. Ammo rarely reaches to the area we are allowed to wander and they tend to frown on us being there on active shooting days - so we stay away if we can hear it.
Looks like there is still army barracks at the mouth of the Reno, however, Google satellite view shows what looks to be agricultural fields around it. I guess it could be grids searched for ammo, but regardless, now that I have identified it, I'll stay away.
The Po Delta park land is quite extensive and includes the delta area, around Valle di Comacchio, even Salina di Cervia south of Ravenna....pretty much any shoreline of bodies of water. However, it still might be huntable during parts of the year - suspect not these days. Lots of birds, regardless.
Thanks for the parking confirmation. I see the auto rental companies for Ravenna are outside the ZTL.
I've visited both Bologna and Ferrara and although I had less time in Ferrara, I'd happily make it the first choice. One thing I'll say about driving there is that it's not hard to drive into the Ferrara center and find the parking lots, nor to use the A13 highway in and out, but we got lost trying to find certain hotels that were not in the center. Regional Veloce trains between the two cities only cost 5 euros each way and take 32 minutes (regular Regional trains take closer to an hour), which is probably more convenient than finding a new parking spot in each.
Thanks Laura. I thought I was sold on Bologna, but there is something about Ferrara that appealed.
I would only use the car for the short bird watching portion. Ferrara to Comacchio isn't much further than Ravenna to Commacchio, but I think I'll rent from Ravenna. Good to know Ferrara is managable with car if I go that route. All the other 'legs' will be train or bus.
The historic part of Comacchio is pretty with many small older buildings lining canals connected by bridges, one of which is a unique architectural attraction. It doesn't have many other monuments so a stop of an hour would suffice, or longer for lunch if you want to try the area's famous specialty, eel. Because it's on the sea and has beaches, there are good services so it would make a decent base for exploring the area. If you want a more interesting, active and larger town, I recommend Chioggia further north which is also on canals with some interesting churches and views of the Venice lagoon.
We made a short self-guided auto tour of the Delta del Po park and it's quite pretty with grasslands and dunes. I don't remember much Park infrastructure or a welcome center, but we got a close-up view of a large herd of deer browsing along one of the back roads. You should try to arrive with as much info as possible as I've found that it's often difficult and time-consuming to figure out rural Italian adventures in situ. Look for the word 'oasis' as it's often included in Italian attractions involving nature. These are interesting sites if you haven't seen them yet:

Thanks Mike. Comacchio would be due to its proximity to birding spots and spotting towers, but I did see some photos with the bridges that look interesting...and read about the eels. Not sure I could eat that knowingly. I now it is more like a fish than a snake, but tell my emotions that. Maybe if it was cooked and plated rather than at the fishmongers. We'll see.
Thanks for the links. I read some of the TripAdvisor reviews, but will look over the other ones when I have time.
Birding is not as popular in Italy than some places, but I have downloads trail maps and descriptions from both Ravenna Regional website and the Po Delta park site, so if I don't see birds, it's my own ineptitude.
