FCO to Vatican area: best inexpensive mode of transportation? (safe)

So, I will be staying in the Vatican area. I have not yet booked a location, but both accommodations I am looking at are near to a metro stop.

My flight arrives later in the evening, so it will certainly be after dark. I don't know how long passport control will take, and then by the time I stop by an ATM for money, potentially stop by a cell phone location for a chip (This is a maybe, I am still weighing my options out there)....I figure it could be 10 pm or so by the time I get to my hotel/B&B.

Because of the hour, I really wanted to avoid the Termini area.

I had decided to do the Sit Bus, because it is pretty affordable and its first stop is the Vatican. However, the drop off area is rather far away. Closer to the Castel than the Vatican. Now, there is a bus stop nearby that I can catch to get closer to either location OR I can walk. But, the walk would be about 20 minutes.

I don't know how contained the situation would be at Termini, going from Roma Termini to the Termini Metro station...if it's relatively safe, I may opt for that, that way I can get dropped off very near my accommodations.

I am also open to other options- going to Roma Trastavere and transiting from there. Or anything else you would suggest.

Just let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I take public transportation a lot, but there are a few times when it’s better to pay for a taxi. Personally, I would be taking a taxi in this situation - late flight, jet lagged, new neighborhood. If you do, be sure to go to the official taxi stand at the Rome airport to not get price gauged.

Be sure to let your lodging know you’re arriving at night, so there is someone to let you inside, especially if you’re staying at a B&B.

Agree, after three flights to get to Rome, we wisely booked a cab service, as mentioned 50 euro. Well worth the door to door service.

Are you really that scared of being around at dinner time? Then take a cab to your final destination, anything unpleasant that could happen at Termini at 10 pm could happen anywhere else in Rome.

Show the driver your credit card before getting on the car, this way dishonest cabbies will leave the run to somebody else.

Those who approach people in the Terminal are not illegal, they are licensed private drivers whose customers did not show up. If any of them offers a ride, the funniest way to reply is: "Sure, I'm going to pay 49 €. No cash" .

I’d probably take a taxi too, but I do want to dispel the idea that the termini area is unsafe. Ten o’clock is not particularly late and there will still be lots of people out and about.

It's not so much fear. I am usually fear-averse, even in situations where....probably a little caution could do me some good.

But, I do know from research that in the very busy locations (like Termini) that it is prudent to be aware of your surroundings and watch your belongings. And I think trying to do that while lugging a bag, and trying to keep an eye and hand on my backpack could be a bit much. If it were backpack only, OR I was around there with no luggage, I think I would be and feel fine.

As to your second point, is there a reason that flashing a credit card scares off dishonest cabbies?

Thank you for the clarification over the safety. That said, I just read an article yesterday which talks about Termini being one of the most unsafe places in the city as far as being robbed and pickpocketing is concerned. I also watched an Italy vlog in which the vlogger was attempted to be robbed at Termini, and there were a number of comments in the comment section about stories from Termini (and other locations throughout Rome). So, on one hand, I think as long as you aren't stupid and remain conscientious, I am sure it is fine....there's also too many anecdotes for me to discount it completely. Does that make sense?

Not every passenger looks at / memorises the license # inside a taxi, but Credit cards leave a trace and make cabbies easily identifiable. It's useful because you often realize you have been scammed after the ride, when the car has already left.

Dishonest drivers want to remain anonymous.

Does that make sense?

No, sorry but no point of view based on "an article", a vlog and YouTube comments makes sense.

IMHO, of course, but I have made a quick search and found three real articles (written by local people paid for writing ) about somebody being robbed around Termini in 2023. All the robberies have happened between 2 AM and 5 AM (and all the bad guys have been arrested within 2 days because the all area is camera controlled and robbers attract too much attention on local press).
