Airport train to Rome Termini, Advance purchase Frecciarossa train to Naples, Circumvesuviana squalid commuter train to Sorrento. That's how it's done. No reason to drive because you don't want a car there. A car is a hindrance.

Edit: While I agree with the next post, many posters here turn out to have failed to consider their departure for home. You may prefer to save your car service money for your flght home day.

It was suggested to me to hire a private car service to get from Naples to my hotel in Sorrento for our upcoming trip in a few weeks. If you are landing then training all in the same day you may want to consider that as well. We used Sorrentosilverstar.com the quoted cost from Naples train station to Sorrento was 85 eruo.

There is a shuttle bus from Naples airport to Sorrento. Maybe that was what you had heard about.

Hello, we just returned from 15 days in Italy. We landed at FCO and were going to Sorrento for 6 nights. We did not make reservations prior to our arrival and were very fortunate to find the Fiumicino express bus available at 30 E (cash) to drive us to Napoli Centrale. The bus was at Terminal 3 and you just have to look for the bus and make sure it is the correct one (they also have buses going to Firenze). After an easy ride (almost 3 hours) we arrived in Napoli. From the bus station, we walked to the train station just following the crowds. We then went to the lower level (following the signs for Circumvesiuana train) and went to Sorrento. The CV train was hot (no a/c or even windows opened) and jammed but we were able to get on with our luggage with no issues - 4 adults w/luggage. The train usually leaves from the track 3 (it did) and took 1 hour to get to Sorrento. The hotel (Plaza hotel) was fabulous and beyond our expectations and centrally located (close to the station and to Piazza Tassa) but good windows/sliders allowed us to sleep soundly. The bus allowed us to not have to go to the Leonardo Express to Termini and then to Napoli Centrale, it was wonderful, clean and a beautiful ride. Let me know if you need more info.
