I will be arriving to FCO outside of Rome on the morning of July 5 (scheduled to arrive around 10:15 AM). From there I will be travelling to Sorrento. What is the best way to get to Sorrento from Rome? Once I take the train to Naples, is it better to take the train to Sorrento, or catch the ferry? Also, should I book tickets for the Rome-Naples train now, or wait until I land? Will the prices go up. As reference, I am willing to take either Trenitalia or Italo trains. Thanks.
James, Rome/Naples/Rome: take either Trenitalia or Italo. Italo runs from Rome's Tiburtina stazione, which is 2 metro stops from Termini. I took Italo last October both ways; it was wonderful. Both Trenitalia and Italo stop at the main station in Naples. Naples to Sorrento and back: Search this board. I know that someone has recommended the bus, which, I think, goes from the rail station to Sorrento. I did take the ferry from Sorrento to Naples to visit a museum and found it to be very pleasant. There is a taxi stand near the port; you could take a taxi to the rail station. Some will suggest taking the Circumvesuviana from Naples rail station to Sorrento, but, in my humble opinion, the Circumvesuviana is an unmitigated disaster...unless you enjoy being crammed like a sardine in a can. And with luggage, it's not worth the effort. I had a culture shock of the 1 hour Italo Rome to Naples, followed by the proletariat 1 hour hell on the Circumvesuviana. I gladly paid to hire a car for the return to Naples!
James, you don't need to buy your Rome/Naples ticket in advance. In fact, you shouldn't when you must go immediately to the train from the plane. If you plane is late, your ticket could be in jeopardy. There are 30+ high-speed trains a day from Rome to Naples so you won't miss out on a train. After retrieving your luggage and clearing Immigration, go out to the Trenitalia train station in front of Terminal 3 and buy your tickets to Naples right there. The agent will arrange your train transfer at Rome-Termini. Just allow at least 15 minutes to change trains as the Leonardo Express from the airport arrives on tracks that are a short walk from your next train. Plus, you need time to view the digital sign board to see which track your train will be on. Two other options. 1) At the terminal 3 train station, just buy a ticket from the airport to the Roma-Tiburtina train station. At Tiburtina, buy a high-speed ticket on the next Italo train. I don't think you can buy Italo tickets at the Trenitalia train station. 2) Again, take the train to the Roma-Tiburtina train station. Go outside and across the street to the Marozzi bus station and buy a ticket on the afternoon bus run to Sorrento. Two bus runs a day. You will have missed the first one. The second one departs at 3:00pm
James,
I fly in Naples NAP last time and took the bus to Sorrento. Save some time. Air fair maybe the same after adding the train tickets.
I agree with Rick. Flying for us was the best option. It was very easy to reach Sorrento from Naples Airport. The Currei bus is just outside the terminal. Costs 10 euro.
