POST TRIP UPDATE: Ok this is long overdue but felt I should share anyway. Our trip went very well! And we were pleasantly surprised at how quickly it took to deboard our plane at FCO and get to the Train to Tiburtina Station. Seems I was warned that it could take long to do this but believe it or not.... it took less than 20 minutes to leave our seats, get our passports stamped and get to the train platform at the FCO airport. We even did a restroom stop along the way. KEEP IN MIND: We didn't have any check on luggage... we packed light so we didn't have to wait around for luggage.... I think this helped a lot!
AND.... since we wanted to catch a high speed Italo Train from Tiburtina to Salerno... we decided to forgo the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini and instead took the cheaper...few minutes slower train to Tiburtina. Took maybe 45 minutes since it made maybe 5 or 6 stops along the way. Got to Tiburtina which is a much, much newer and less confusing terminal than Termini. The Tiburtina Terminal is practically brand new... they have new shops and it is much, much easier to navigate than Roma Termini...signage is more clearly understood and less cluttered. AND...the Italo Train company has a passenger lounge with polite, English speaking staff who are very, very "customer friendly".... honestly ... I was blown away by their customer skills. : )
ITALO TRAIN WEBSITE
Had time for a relaxing panini and coffee while waiting for our train... super clean terminal and restrooms... non of the pushy "can I help you types" you find at Roma Termini...the type that will help you buy your ticket and expect a "tip". :\ We boarded our Italo Train which was very new, clean and modern.... since we bought our ticket upon arrival we paid the 78 Euro for two in their Flex SMART Classification which was all that was left farewise... had we booked earlier...we could've gotten a lower fare but without the Flex status... overall our Italo Train trip was very, very nice. Cruised South to Naples for a short stop and then to Salerno... took about 2 hours +/-. Did the return journey on Italo Train in reverse.
While you might save money and have more schedule options on Tren Italia, I found T.I. to be a mixed bag of travel quality in terms of car condition, cleanliness and customer service. Seemed that the Tren Italia staff weren't too polite or "tourist friendly" when I asked for help on schedules, train numbers, etc. During our stay, we had been misdirected 3 times to wrong trains despite my clear questions regarding where I wanted to go. Next time in Italy... I'm doing Italo Train. Most Americans who I spoke with had similar observations.
