FCO to Positano; private boat tour in Positano

We will be 4 adults arriving via redeye to FCO in July, heading to Positano. Given that the cost of a train + bus is ~50-60 Euros pp and a loonnnggg trip, and a private car is ~100 Euros pp but very direct, we're planning on getting a private car. I've gotten quotes from 2 of the companies recommended by Rick (Benevenuto and Monetti)--does anyone have any other recommendation, or any recent insight into either of those companies?

Also, we're going to rent a private boat for a day in Positano, to avoid the big crowds on the big boats. A friend recommended just going down to the dock one morning, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with any specific boats and captains? We are 4 adults going to look at the sights, maybe swim a little, get off somewhere and have lunch, etc.

Thanks

I think you have overstated the train and bus cost, especially if you consider taking Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and the public bus from there. Do you know how fast the fast train to Naples is? It's really fast. However, crowds in July will make both of the last two "seats" (if you get a seat!) VERY unpleasant. So with a generous budget, you are entitled to some comfort. Have you considered how crowded the car and the trunk of the car might be? Note that you could also train to Salerno and car service from there.

The brutal traffic part of the trip, Naples to Positano will be the same time however you travel by road. Yes, you'll be in air conditioned sedan comfort, but it could be a slow ride.

Does redeye mean late departure from your home country (not shown in your signature posting because you left it off your profile) or late arrival in Italy - it makes a big difference in what options you might have.

When we were in Sorrento in 2014, I noticed that Monetti wasn't the rock-bottom price, but that's not a reason not to use them. We took our hotel's partner limo service, which worked out fine, and slightly cheaper, in a clean, new Mercedes. I figure the hotel has a big incentive to satisfy their customers with the referral.

If you are arriving in the AM, you can always take a train to Salerno and a ferry to Positano, there are quite a few throughout the day....a lot more relaxing than train-ing and bus-ing to get there when you're half asleep....

I don't know of any private boats (maybe your hotel might?) but I was able to rent my own boat in Salerno and do the exact thing you want to do without having a captain.....so that might be an option for y'all as well.....we actually went out to li Galli islands and kind of floated and swam and then docked for about 30 min to pick up some snacks n Amalfi....it was a great day!
