FCO to PMO Roundtrip

We are flying on Delta to FCO and then taking ITA to Palermo in May 2023. I left 4 hours in between flights so that we can get from FCO arrival to the ITA departure gate. We only have carry on bags and one member of our party needs a wheelchair which I have requested. He is elderly and walks slow.

Unfortunately, ITA has cancelled and rescheduled our flights on two occasions so far. This latest cancellation has made our timeframes shorter.

We are scheduled to arrive in FCO on Delta from JFK at 7:30am. I checked and this flight is usually over an hour early but of course no guarantees. Our ITA flight to Palermo is now 9:25am about two hours difference. The next ITA flight is not until much later in the afternoon. Question #1: Will this be enough time to get through the airport to catch 9:25am flight? Again, no checked baggage.

On our return from Palermo we are scheduled to arrive at FCO at 12:30 now. Our Delta flight back to JFK is scheduled for 3:20 about a 3 hour difference. Same question as above. Do we have enough time to catch that flight.

Note: I am not familiar with the layout of FCO and how long it would take to get to where we need to go and if we have to go through passport control and security. Any help provided would be appreciated.

Are these on one or two different tickets? And are you aware that ITA is more restrictive than Delta about what you can carry on? My husband who does not want to downsize is going to check his bag for ITA.

We have two different tickets and we only have standard carryon bags and maybe a back pack

Unless I’m mistaken, these are not codeshare airlines. If that’s correct, then can you get your boarding pass for ITA before you get to FCO? I’m hoping someone with more knowledge will chime in.

I do know that last year ITA was very strict about weight of carryon.

Another issue to keep in mind is if you have r/t tickets on ITA (FCO-PMO) and you miss the first flight ( FCO-PMO) your return flight (PMO-FCO) will be cancelled and you will have to buy a whole new r/t ticket.

Delta does sell a r/t JFK-PMO ticket, which would protect you i.e., make it the airline's responsibility to get you on your way if a plane were late causing a missed connection.

The JFK-PMO r/t ticket is less than the JFK-FCO r/t ( random dates in May) so a bit puzzling that OP chose the two ticket method.

As long as you flights are on time you should have enough time, assuming your carry-on fits ITA's requirements.
