Fyi, we were able to catch the freccerossa train from FCO direct to Florence. Had been thinking that we had to go to Termini station first. Saved the $leonardo express expense. Having a great time! Thanks for all your help.

Historically you had to go Termini for any other train. The recent direct train to Florence is a next addition but the frequency is limited.

There are only a few direct trains from FCO to Florence, so it's great that your flight timing allowed you to connect with one of those. In most cases, passengers still have to connect at Roma Termini.
