FCO- Termini-SMN

This community gives wonderful advice - hoping you can help one more time. We will be flying into FCO arriving early morning. We will be heading to Florence from there - planning to travel by train. I assume we will need to take the train from FCO to Termini and then get a train from there to SMN. Is this correct? Other question - will it be ok to purchase tickets when we arrive? I am concerned that if we do and our flight is late or there is any other hold up we will miss the train we've planned for. What do you recommend? Thanks to all!
Happy traveling!

You are correct in routing. There are other routing but that one works as well as any. No problem with purchasing tickets on arrival. You can purchase the tickets in the train station at the airport so all you to do is walk to the platform for Florence. There is at least one train an hour to Florence so you will have no problems with availability.

Kelley, As Frank mentioned, the most direct route will be to take the Leonardo Express from FCO to Roma Termini (€14-15 PP, 32 minutes), and then transfer to the Freccia high speed trains from Termini to Firenze SMN (~€43 Base fare, 2nd class, 1H:32M). The fares mentioned above are of course subject to change. BE SURE to validate your ticket for the L.E. prior to boarding, or you'll face hefty fines which will be collected on the spot! The ticket for the Freccia trains is specific to train, date and time, so can only be used on a specific train and doesn't have to be validated. You can buy your tickets for the entire journey when you arrive at the FCO rail station, either from a staffed ticket office or a Kiosk. You may find it helpful to peruse the excellent Ron In Rome website for photos and lots of other information. You could also consider travelling to Tiburtina or Ostiense stations and using the high speed Italo train to Florence, but the method suggested above is probably the most straight forward. Happy travels!

Kelly, there are 55 or so high-speed trains a day from Rome-Termini to Florence so you won't have trouble getting a train. You have done well to wait as there is always the possibility of a late plane. The airport train station is in front of Terminal 3. You can buy your tickets to Florence there. Just be sure that there is about 15-20 minutes between trains at Rome-Termini as the Leonardo Express comes in on a track that is a short walk from your next high-speed train. You'll need time to walk into the main terminal area, scan the digital signage to find your train and track number and then walk to your train and board. As Ken says above, don't forget to validate your ticket for the Leonardo Express. It's a Regionale train. No train information on Regionale tickets except 1st class or 2nd class. You won't need to do this for the high-speed as you have specific carriage and seat assignments.
