Been in contact with AA about carry on and personal item. From USA to Italy it appears to be familiar - 1 carry on and 1 personal item, provided they do not exceed size/weight limits. However, they have not been able to exactly answer what, if any, differences might exist when returning. The FCO site says one hand luggage and a shopping bag, but to consult your airline. Just wondering if anyone has any insight or if I should not even worry about this, as we should be ok given AA's response.
If your return flight is on AA then it should be the same rules.
If you are taking a different carrier, then check with them.
Its the airline, not the airport, that dictates carry on policy
If AA on return it is the same rule of one personal and one handheld.
Thank you all! First trip to Europe for my wife and I, and I appreciate the information this forum has provided!! Makes sense about the airline controlling the situation, but just wanted to check. :-)
Just one caveat: if any portion of the flight is on a European carrier, the size and weight specifications may be more restrictive than on American. I have been required to check luggage on both Emirates and Alitalia due to their size/weight restrictions, if it is an American plane, you will have no problems with carry on.
The proper phrase is - you SHOULD have no problem with your luggage returning but it is always dependent on the gate personal. But it is a good question. There was a time when you could only have two items when going through security at Heathrow. I don't know if that still exists today. And last year through Rome there was no limits at security.
If you are flying direct to the USA from FCO, you're probably on an AA-operated flight. Therefore, AA baggage rules will apply and they will be applied at the discretion of the gate/boarding agent.
If, however, you are connecting through another European city such as London on your return flight, you are probably on a foreign partner (BA?) code share flight. If so, you will be held to that carrier's baggage rules.
I can tell you that the last time I traveled through FCO on a BA flight, ALL carry-on luggage had to placed in a luggage-sizer at check-in in order to get a yellow tag. In order to carry your bag on the plane, if had to have the yellow tag or the boarding agent refused it. Baggage too large for the sizer, or in excess of the number of bags allowed, had to be checked.
All of this makes sense and will be helpful for any future plans. Our flights are direct from FCO to DFW, so no other carriers involved!
