FCO connection information

I'm looking for a frequent traveler to FCO for some advice.
We already have Delta tickets to FCO from Atlanta. We arrive at the Rome airport at 10:15 am. Then we have also already purchased Alitalia tickets for a flight the same day to Palermo departing at 14:55 (operated by Darwin Airlines).

Can anyone provide any "heads up" information, things to be aware of, and specifics regarding how to most efficiently proceed from our arrival terminal to our departure terminal/gate? I believe we will arrive at Terminal 3 at FCO (about the middle of the complex) - and I think Alitalia departs from Terminal 1 on the far east side of the building.

I'm just trying to avoid any beginning of the trip catastrophes.
thanks!

Hmmmm.....You didn't say if you are checking bags to FCO or doing carry-ons; if checking, don't be surprised if it takes an hour + before they arrive at baggage claim-you are now in Italy! If checking, you will have to get your bags, exit through customs control, and hoof down to the Alitalia counter where you can probably check your bags at 12:55 and then re-enter through security-shouldn't be too bad at that time of day, but you never know. If you are doing carry-on, you only go through PP control after exiting your DL flight, and can walk to the Alitalia area to catch your new flight. For the Alitalia flight you might be forced to gate check your carry-on depending on the plane and that could get costly. Usually in the EU I check bags because of the strict rules concerning size and weight for carry-ons, so you'd better check the rules. Oh! One more thing-Alitalia gate agents are the worlds' best in ignoring passengers-they literally can frown right through you!

Our experience with FCO and Alitalia is not quite as dire as Jerry's. For us over a number of flights the only major unpredictable hang up has been immigration. Once it took us over two hours on a Saturday am to clear immigration. Checked luggage has been the same as most US airports. Since you are traveling on two separate tickets and if you have checked luggage you will need to go to the front and recheck everything. Security can be a little slow but you should have plenty of time. Food services in FCO are OK. FCO is not that difficult of an airport to get around. There was a fire last year that was causing some problem but assume most of that has been resolved.

Sorry. All bags are carry on for Delta, but probably too big or heavy for Alitalia, so we purchased tickets on that flight that includes one checked bag.

thanks!

The FCO check-in area may have now purchased some ropes and stanchions, but when I was there, the lines were more like blobs merging in a lava lamp.

Laura, what a great description! Italy does not have a "queue culture", but will line up for art (museum queues).
