FCO Car Rental Return

We're driving from the eastern side of Italy (Fermo) back to Rome, is there a gas station close to the airport to fill up before turning the car in?

We have never had problems finding a gas station near FCO prior to returning a rental car.

Thanks, what has been your experience returning the car? Is it a lengthy process or more simple?

Who did you rent from? We rented from Hertz. Instead of just driving up and them using their handheld device like here in the States, you have to go to the desk in the garage. It took us a little longer because the attendant wrote down the odometer reading wrong, indicating we'd driven 30,000 kilometers in 10 days. We had to wait for him to go back and get another reading. I'd say it took them 20-25 minutes to check us in.

Our experience was just about the same as the US. Follow the signage at the airport into a garage. Check in was about the same for the US. I did walk completely around the car with the attendant and took a couple of general pictures. We caught a gas station on the edge of Rome, maybe five miles or so from the airport. Don't remember a gas station at the airport.

Save this location on your Google Maps and set it as your destination.
This is where I generally stop to refuel before returning the car at FCO, coming from Tuscany on the A1.

I believe it’s the last freeway service area along the beltway (Circonvallazione GRA) before getting to the freeway to FCO. If you come from the A1 from Umbria (Foligno-Terni) you will pass by it. If you miss it, you will need to exit the freeway somewhere before the airport and look for a gas station. If you refill here, you will save yourself time because you don’t need to exit the freeway and can go straight to the rental car return. From here to the airport there are still about 25 or 30km from the airport but at most you’ll use 2 liters. I’ve never been charged extra fuel charges because of that.

If you decide to take the longer route through Abruzzo (Via Teramo) on the A24, then you will drive clockwise around Rome through the southern portion of the GRA beltway. In that case the last Service Area on the GRA before the freeway to Fiumicino is below. The route via Abruzzo is longer in miles, but it’s about equal in time to the one Via Foligno and Terni (Umbria).
