FCO Airport in Rome vs. NAP Airport in Naples

Which is a better airport to fly out of? I would like to fly out of Naples, but worry that it might be a lot more stressful than the one in Rome. I am also concerned about the safety of the Naples airport. Actually I do not know anything about either airport. It would be more convenient to fly out of Naples, but we can take the bus to Rome and fly from FCO. Please advise. Many thanks! Ruth

Generally speaking, the Rome FCO would be a better airport to fly non-stop back to the U.S. Otherwise, you'll be flying to another European city to transfer planes for a non-stop flight to the States. In your case, Seattle is at the end of the line and SEATAC is not easy to get to. I was thinking you can fly non-stop to Seattle out of Amsterdam, so Naples-Amsterdam Schipol-Seattle might be an option for you. Otherwise, you'd do better to fly FCO-JFK-Seattle. Or, FCO-ATL-Seattle. I prefer non-stop flights back to the U.S., as European cities and airports often see work slowdowns and/or labor strikes. They're often not as reliable as the airports in the U.S. I also try to stay out of airports in the NY City area due to flight delays and ultra busy airspace. Good luck!

Personnally, I avoid FCO when flying back to the US-I find it the most stressful airport in the EU while NAP is like flying out of a place like Boise. Have used both, FCO many times, however, I use FCO to connect back to AMS or FRA or MAN to the US because passport control is at one of those not at FCO.In addition, at FCO you have to fight your way through T5 which is too small for the volumn of people it is trying to handle for US flights. As an example, on our last trip back in May, we flew FCO to FRA with about 70 minutes to connect, and made it through passport control and to our gate with time to spare. Never noticed any dodgy stuff at NAP as it seemed to be well secured if slightly "behind the curve" as far as customer service is concerned.

Ruth I like the Naples/Amsterdam/Seattle option much better. I don't like FCO either if I can avoid it. Amsterdam is a wonderful airport compared to FCO. In 2010, ranked 7th best international airport by business organization despite how busy it is. If you are staying in Sorrento, there is a bus that goes directly to the Naples Airport. I think about an hour. Very cheap. I assume there is a direct bus from Naples as well. Naples Airport is very safe and small as previously noted. Good luck with your plans! Bobbie

Ruth, the Naples airport is small, safe and easy to navigate. In fact, while we were waiting for flight once, we wandered the streets until we found a fantastic restaurant. FCO can be a mess, and...... you had better be in FCO at LEAST 3 hours before your flight, or you may miss it. Go with Naples.
