Not in Tuscany but in Orvieto, Umbria two wineries offering Orvieto Classico and other wines....Tenuta le Velette just outside Orvieto offers wine-tasting, tours of the Estruscan wine cellars (still in use) and sometimes lunch - must book ahead - phone 076-329-090 www.levelette.it. Also Custodi offers wine tasting and lunch - again book ahead - 076-329-053 www.cantinacustodi.com., Orvieto is an interesting city and an easy drive from Cortona.

In Chianti we enjoyed Badia a Coltibuono in a small group by appointment. We spent the night in little Radda which you could visit. In Montalcino we toured Fattoria dei Barbi which offers one of the more commercial visits and I don't believe reservations are required. We had a great personal tour of the highly rated Altesino by appointment only. It is located near the base of Montalcino but you do have to drive a short time on a flat gravel road. Also by appointment we visited Costanti which is one of the most accessible and close to Montalcino. It is a smaller winery and she takes you out to the vines as well to educate you more. As we live 40 minutes from top California wineries we visit them alot and we were very impressed with our Italian Winery tours which are much more intimate and much less commercial. The exception being the little place in Montepulciano which Rick likes but is really best for those that have no other option IMO. This is a great link www.consorziobrunellodimontalcino.it for the Brunellos which known as one of Italy's best.
