I just found National Geographic Traveler on my Texture app. I had not heard of that magazine before and it got me thinking : what are your favorite travel magazines and websites other than of course Rick Steves and trip advisor?
I subscribe to ITN ( International Travel Newsletter) a black and white newsprint mag that I love. As soon as it arrives, I sit down and read from cover to cover.
It covers more than just Europe.
They also have a website
ITN Newsletter site
For years I had subscriptions to several hard copy travel magazines (pre-internet days) and my favorites were National Geographic Traveler, Travel & Leisure, and Budget Travel. Both NG Traveler and T&L were fun to read and I got some great ideas from them but a lot of the types of travel they covered were a bit above my budget. I got the most helpful hints, suggestions, and deals from Budget Traveler. I still get their email newsletter. I always loved just paging through the magazines even if I couldn't afford that kind of travel. But then I like to watch travel shows, read anything about travel - including brochures for travel that I will never take and reading onlline blogs and newsletters. When you're hooked on travel, you're hooked!
National Geographic is my favorite but I don't collect much of hard copy magazines anymore. I read the travel sections of the New York Times and Lonely Planet, as well as random blogs (they really vary by country but I've been able to get really good info from blogs). I also use the local websites of the country/city I'm visiting (Iceland is a good example - I can find just about anything I need from their national and Reykjavik websites). In the US, I look on the National Park Service website quite a lot ,and I get visitor guides online from whatever place I'm visiting. I watch Anthony Bourdain's travel shows too, as well as Globe Trekker.
I get Travel &Leisure. But, mostly I read travel blogs. I have over 70 bookmarked!!!
I love the National Geographic Traveler magazine! In addition to that, I also recommend the FlyerTalk forums. They are mostly about flights, but they also have sections for travel.
Ditto on the travel blogs. I just returned from Italy where 90% of my trip plans and logistics came from information gathered from various travel blogs and social media. For example, girlinflorence.com can provide you with virtually every detail you might want or need to plan your trip to Florence (sights, restaurants, lodgings, activities going on that month, etc.). I enjoy the fresh content and less-curated approach that the bloggers provide, and I tend to gravitate to more of that content to research future trips. NGT is great for its quality of pictures, but there is so much else out there. Pick a topic, and start peeling back the layers - you won't be disappointed!
Love girlinflorence and also follow her on Instagram! I don't get many travel magazines but just got a subscription to Lonely Planet magazine cuz it was so cheap. I now have a subscription to the magazine ITALIA! which is published in the U.K. by Anthem Publishing. I purchased it at my local Barnes & Noble for a long time but it was pricy--$11.99/issue. When I subscribed last May there was a special 2 yrs for price of 1. So I got 2 yrs/24 issues for $100 so about $4.15/issue. Each month a region or town is highlighted and it has beautiful glossy pictures and also includes recipes and info on properties for sale in Italy. It comes in a timely manner from the U.K. by Royal Mail Air Mail (the plastic wrapper says) and by mid February I got the March issue. I do save all of them as they are beautiful! Several times a year they also publish ITALIA! Guides for various cities and regions like Venice & Veneto and Tuscany & Florence. My subscription does not include these city/region guides. U.S. subscribers are serviced through Int'l Media Service (IMS) out of Virginia Beach, VA. Their phone number is 757-428-8180. The website listed inside the magazine for subscriptions is
www.anthem-publishing.com/italia I was notified of the half-price sale because I believe I signed up for their emails and I got a notification and signed up for my subscription online. They have half off more than once a year I believe. They also offer a digital version but I like getting the hard copy. Not sure what digital price is. I haven't really used them so much for trip planning (but you could)but for an Italy fix when we are not there!
