favorite neighborhood in Rome

Sorry if this question was asked before, but after searching on google and this site i can't find the answer. What is you favorite neighborhood in Rome. We are looking for an apartment, we don't mind walking, but it would be nice to be close to a bus or subway. we would like it to be close to restaurants, cafés, shops etc. I find it hard to choose because the sights are in different areas. We will do the usual firt timer Rome, Coliseum, Vatican, Spanish steps, Catacombs, etc.

I would like to add to that question and ask, which neighborhoods in Rome have the best night life, i.e. Bars, late night restaurants, street vendors, etc.

I studied there a few years ago, and lived in Trastevere. It's walking distance to most places, but some may be longer walks. A main piazza with many bus stops is a close walk. All the usual "first time Rome" sights are dispersed throughout the city so staying by one will put you further from others. The area near the Pantheon/Trevi Fountain is probably the most central. Trastavere isn't far off. Restaurants & Cafes are also dispersed throughout Rome. What kind of shops are you looking for?

As for night life, it's been a few years, but I can't imagine it's changed much, Testaccio is the area with most of the clubs.

Another great neighborhood with a market is Campo di Fiori! It's convenient to many of the major sites.

There was a large flea market walking distance from Trastevere also (further from the river), I think it was called Porta Portese. It's probably the largest market that I can remember. I think it's only on Sundays though, and maybe not every week. Pickpockets abound there though, a friend had her purse stolen there when she wasn't paying attention.

We rented a great apartment in Piazzo Farnese, right beside Campo D'Fiori. We had our 4 year old with us and walked to all the sites, Patheon, Trevi, Spanish Steps, Colliseum. We only took public transport, a taxi, once to the Vatican. For apartment rental info; Contact Helen Yeh, www.comfortitalia.com

We just got back from our Roman honeymoon 2 weeks ago. We rented an appartment just a few streets from Piazza Navona. It was the perfect location for us. We walked everywhere, which was more appealing to us than the jam backed buses! It was wonderful because we could walk to our sites (forum/colloseum 20-25 minutes, vatican 15 minutes, Pantheon & Trevi Fountain 5-10 minutes) and once we got in for the night we could walk around Piazza Navona enjoying the artists and restaurants. The farthest thing we visited was the Borghese Gallery, which was an hour away, but walking in Rome goes by fast, as there is so much to admire! Also, there was a street for shopping (clothes, etc) very close by. Perfect location!
