I'm currently in beautiful Florence...and I'm stuck in my hotel room because I sprained my ankle. Oy. Help lift my spirits please by telling me your favorite Florence experience/memories!
Walked to Piazzale Michelangelo and then enjoyed the marvelous view. Very restful & extremely beautiful. We then went on up the hillside to San Miniato Church and stayed for Mass (1700?) I think Bus 12 or 13 will take you to both. Don't sit in the room...get on the bus!!! Let your ankle (and soul) mend as you overlook beautiful Florence. Blessings!
Hi Lisa. I also loved the views from Piazzale Michelangelo but since your ankle is non-operational right now, take the taxi there! It's not very far & therefore not very expensive by taxi. Also loved sitting outside & people watching.
Oh no! Get better soon, Lisa! One of the things I loved to do was sit in a cafe (outdoors if nice weather) and enjoy a wonderful meal, snack, or gelato and people watch! Also, not sure where you're staying but if you can make it to one of the little Elettrico D bus stops, as rick says, it takes you on a bit of a "joyride" through the Oltrarno, which I kind of enjoyed.
Thanks for the replies all! I'm staying in in order to expedite healing so I don't suffer for the rest of the trip. I'll stay in if it means I get better faster.
My husband and I visited the Museum of San Marco, not knowing much about it. We looked at the lovely Fra Angelo paintings and then climbed a staircase. At the top of the staircase was the famous Annunciation. I never realized it was a fresco! The angel had glittering wings. Then we walked farther, and found to our astonishment that we were in a monastery, full of tiny rooms, each room with it's own Fra Angelico fresco. Amazing!
I wish you a speedy recovery.
Opening the windows of the hotel room and listening to the church bells chime--something you may be able to do even with a sprained ankle!
Going to Fiesole by bus, walking up the hill to the little monastery, attending a brief unexpected evening service in the little chapel (the blessing of the Host, apparently), walking back down the hill a little ways, having dinner outside with a view of Florence as the sky darkened and the occasional roars of the soccer game drifted up to us. Magical.
My fondest memory of Florence is attending my neice's wedding in the Palazzo Vecchio followed by a beautiful reception/dinner at the Hotel Aurora in Fiesole.
What great memories you all have! Thanks for lifting my spirits. I was able to get out some today, our last day. We're off to Venice in the morning. :)
Choosing from my non-walking memories: A long, relaxed and delicious dinner at a restaurant in the Oltarnio. At least do that on your last day in Florence! Dinner on the piazza Santo Spirito is fun, albeit a bit more touristy than other Oltarnio locations. Upside: the food is still excellent, it was the only place we ate in the Oltarnio where the waiter spoke English, and the best part is the people watching is great there.
