We plan to rent a car and would like ideas for towns to use as bases for exploring. We plan to start in Urbino and may pick up a rental car in Fano (open to other suggestions.) Our plan is it use Lecce as a base at the end of this time. We'll have 11 days for these two areas and want to spend 3 or so days in each city we use as a base. We're mainly interested in the food, wine, and archaeological sites. Thanks for any suggestions!
Stop in Camerino and Macerata en-route. Spend 3 days in the Promontorio del Gargano area.
We've looked at those areas - that seems like a good plan. Thank you!
We're going to this area in October. For our bases, we will use Senigallia, Trani, Matera, a masseria near Pezze di Greco, and then Lecce. Interesting archeological sites we plan to see include the sassi of Matera, the trulli of Alberobello and Locorotondo (which we'll visit from our masseria), and Egnazia (near Monipoli), where we will supposedly find some of the best Roman ruins in the region. I'd suggest making one of your bases on a masseria (farmhouse) where they generally make their own olive oil, have fruit trees, etc. Here's a website that helped me get to know this area better: http://www.italycookingcourses.com/2011/05/top-places-to-visit-in-puglia/ Have fun!
Here's another link to check out. It's a bike tour, which we're not doing, but it gives great descriptions of the various towns in Puglia: http://www.bikerentalsplus.com/index.php?id=75&tid=1465
