favorite catacomb in Rome?

Last trip, I visited the Catacombs of St Agnes. The experience left something to be desired... the "tour" was a quick jog through the catacombs, trying not to lose the group. I got attached to a big group of high school kids who mostly treated it as a horror movie analog. I'd like to try again. Can you recommend any specific catacombs? And if so, I'd love to know how to reach the site via public transportation.
Thanks

Sherry, have I got a web site for you! International Catacomb Society (catacombsociety.org) isn't the easiest to navigate but it gives you a good description of what's available. Perhaps the most well-known are the catacombs of San Callisto and San Sebastiano, both on the Appian Way. You can get there by bus. Be sure to check closed days, if you plan to visit more than one. Both of the catacombs I mentioned have tours in different languages.

The only one we visited was Priscilla and it was well worth it. We went in the afternoon (this was in early September) and waited for the "next English tour." No other English speakers showed up in perhaps 15-20 minutes, so we had a private tour. We took the bus to get there and had to walk a bit after we got off. The buses and directions are covered in Rick's Rome book.

Both San Sebastian and Callisto are absolutely amazing. I much preferred them to the Vatian Scavi tour.

Having a favorite would suggest that I have seen them all. I haven't. We had a great tour of San Sebastian on a Sunday. Which day are you in Rome? We took advantage of the restrict traffic flow on the Appian Way on Sunday. Do it if you have a choice.
