favorite B&B's under 90 Euro

I have Rick's Italy 2010, but I'd love to hear your B&B recommendations. Our budget is 90 Euro max and we're travelling in April. I know that's gonna be tough but it's the only way we'll still be able to afford food, which I'm kinda partial to...We'll be staying in Rome, Sorrento, Orvieto, Siena, the Cinque Terre, Florence and Venice. Thanks everyone in advance!

And as per Doug's suggestion below...Breakfast is important but not mandatory. Shared bath is ok. We're also open to small "mom & pop" hotels.

Sue - we probably need to discuss your expectations.

"B&B" is a specific type of lodging - small, owner operated, serving large breakfasts. Italy has small budget hotels that may or may not serve breakfast at a price.

If you're looking for hotels below 90 Euro in these towns, please say so. Is the breakfast part of it important to you? Is a bathroom in your room essential?

With this information, you'll attract a lot of recommendations here. Then you can go on Tripadvisor for many more reviews of specific places.

Sue, we booked a hotel in Rome using "B&B Association of Rome" but had difficulty finding anything under 90 Euro. Our room near the Vatican was 92 Euro--though our room was fine it was "off the beaten path." Next time we'll pay a little more and stay near the city center.

I recently stayed at La Dimora del Centro in Florence, they have 3 rooms and one of them has no duomo view and is thus less expensive (but still roomy and REALLY comfortable). I can't imagine a better place in the center of Florence actually, and I paid 85 euros!

http://www.ladimoradelcentro.it/ and I believe they just opened another B&B right nearby. The owners are a married couple and they're just lovely.

Tops on my list of favorite B&B's is in Sorrento. The place is called IL Roseto, check it out on trip advisor. I think we paid 65 euro per night. It was by far the best B&B I have stayed at. The only downside is that it is about a 10 minute walk from the main area of Sorrento. If you don't mind the walk it is well worth it. I can't believe it is not in Rick's book.

Yeah, maybe a terminology issue, but what you want are cheap stays because even Breakfast in B&B in Italy are pretty meager. I much prefer a caffe and croissant to anything found in a hotel. Going in April is good, because you should still get off-season or shoulder season prices, except if you bump into Easter. I think in each of those cities 90 Euro is reasonable, maybe something with the bath down the hall, but with some investigation, do-able. I would start with some Rick Steves picks, but contact them for an April price, let them know you are flexible, prefer budget (they will push "deluxe" rooms first) You can also use Venere and Trip Advisor to target additional one and two star hotels not in RS; or also consider Lonely Planet and Lets Go picks. In all cases, contact the hotel directly, skipping even their own booking page, to get a price offered by a person rather than a rack rate.

For your trip you might also consider a longer stay in either Florence or Siena, day tripping to the other. Also, if Venice proves difficult, consider Padua or other towns within a short distance, taking the train in.

Rome: (Actually 20 min. by train outside of Rome in Palestrina)....Anne's Place B&B (http://www.by anne.com). Wonderful accommodations and gracious hosts - a real bargain at under 90 euros.

Sorrento: Il Nido Hotel, which runs as a B&B. Spectacular views, great food, family-run and wonderful. When we stayed there three years ago, it was under 90 euros. (http://www.ilnido.it)

Neither place will require you to have a car....check out their websites.

Hi Sue, I think it's possible to find accommodation at that price since you're OK with shared bath. Try cross-pollinate.com for B&B's. The same folks run the eco-friendly The Beehive B&B in Rome near Termini station. I didn't stay there but ate at their pleasant vegetarian cafe. In Rome, there are also the convents or 'holy hotels', there's a list at www.santasusanna.org, the website of the American Catholic church in Rome. Some of these lodgings have curfews. Venice is a challenge, but I found a good deal last year at the Hotel Santa Lucia, they may have double rooms (shared bath) for around 90 Euros. I also corresponded with the couple who run B&B San Giacomo in Venice, who were very patient with my questions. Their rooms look comfortable - photos on their Facebook group. In Siena, I'd recommend the Albergo Bernini, or La Casa di Antonella, but be prepared for plenty of street noise at the latter - but Antonella makes up for it with a breakfast that's more than just a croissant and coffee.

Go to Venere.com, under their B&B section you'll find "Al Pantheon Con Thomas Mann". We stayed there in June of 2009. It was only 90 euro per notte. The room is nothing special, but the location was great! It's literally in the shadow of the Pantheon, steps away. A good bargain. Some folks have complained about noise. We didn't have this problem, and one of the nights was a Saturday. The place was clean, staff friendly, private bath, more of a hotel with breakfast than a B&B.

Sue, I stayed at this hotel(santacostanza.com)last May for 68Euros last May. I booked my room on Orbitz. However, check the site for their rates. It is about a mile from Termini on Embassy row-Nomentana and April 26. This tree-lined area is readily accessible by 4 buses and one metro stop. Longest wait for a bus downtown, 3 minutes. Never used the metro as it quite a walk away. The ensuite rooms were well appointed. The breakfast was huge, so I didn't have the appetite to eat huge meals later on. Nearby are supermarkets, restaurants, and tobacconists for your bus tickets. The closest restaurant is....wait for it....Chinese.
Have a magical visit. I know it was for me.

Sue in Sorrento with stayed at Ulisse deluxe hostel, breakfast is ok, rooms are very nice, not like a hostel at all, it is a hotel, rooms are 70 euros with breakfast.

In Cinque Terre with stayed in Manarola, at www.carugiu.com
the suite, is more like an apartment, we loved it, 70 euros per night no breakfast.

Here is another recommendation for the Amalfi Coast region, but it is located in Amalfi. It is the Le Palme and it is a family run B & B.

http://www.lepalmeamalfi.com/index.html

Their rooms are dirt cheap, the accommodations are pretty nice, and they can have dinner delivered to your room from their restaurant located in town. They have the best lasagna I have ever tasted. Their rooms start at 60 Euro/night.

There is one hitch. It is located on a steep hillside overlooking Amalfi. You have to trek down 300 steps from the hotel above through the lemon groves to get to this place. They do have a porter service, THANK GOD! It is another 656 steps down to get to the road to town. We took the bus back up.

Thanks everyone for all your excellent suggestions and recommendations. You've helped me narrow down my choices, and guess what? I booked all of it for 65 to 80 Euro per night. Mission accomplished. Grazie!

Sue - Do you mind letting us know which places you picked? And, when you return, please come back with your opinions on each place . . . :)

As per request, here is what we booked...

Rome- Aldebaran.
Sorrento- Il Roseto.
Orvieto- Casa Selita.
Montalcino- Sogno del Musicista.
Volterra- La Primavera.
Vernazza- Camere Giuliano.
Florence- Il Cielo.
Venice- Anastasia.

These are all B&B's that priced between 65 to 80 Euros per night with the exception of our last stop, Hotel Anastasia, which I was able to book thru points. We'll be home the first week in May and I'll be sure to post an opinion on each.
