Google Hangouts (and Hangouts Dialer for Android phones) - make free phone calls home to the US if you are American, to any US number, even landlines

Google Maps is an very invaluable app that I used so often on my travels.
New to me this recent trip is WhatsApp; you can talk to anyone else, anywhere in the world, who also has WhatsApp!
Google translate app also very helpful.

I like Tripit. Keeps me very well organized! I also like WhatsApp. Had fun being in contact with my friend who was on a 5 month round-the-world cruise. Have used the Metro Apps for both Paris and Berlin. Very easy to use for someone as tech challenged as I am! They may make them for other cities, too, but those are the only two I have recently used.
