Hello - We would like to travel from Positano to Florence using public transportation. We heard the best route to take is a bus from Positano to Sorrento, then train from Sorrento to Naples then over to Florence. The layout of the SITA bus schedule is hard to understand (i.e. from Positatno to Sorrento.) Ideally, we'd like to leave as early as possible to have time left in the day to tour Florence. Truly appreciate any insight you can provide - thanks!
Lindsey, There are two routes you could use: (1) Positano to Sorrento by Bus (1 hour), Circumvesuviana to Napoli Centrale (about an hour) and then Freccia high speed train to Firenze SMN (2.5 - 3 hours depending on which train you choose). (2) Positano to Amalfi by Bus (50 minutes), Amalfi to Salerno by Bus (1H:15M) and then Freccia high speed train to Firenze SMN (3.5-4.5 hours, depending on which train you choose). There's also the option of travel by boat to Sorrento or Napoli (although I didn't check schedules), but with luggage that's not something I'd do. Of the two choices, No. 1 is likely the method I'd use. Happy travels!
http://www.amalficoastweb.com/orari_sita_bus_timetables.html Not sure what is so difficult about the Sita schedule. The first bus leaves Amalfi at 0630,stops in Positano at 0710 and arrives at Sorrento at 0810. From there you will take the Circumvesuviana train toNaples: www.vesuviana.com The from Naples you take a fast train to Florence with Trenitalia:
www.trenitalia.com There are also boats connecting Positano to both Salerno or Naples. From either you can then take a train.
Lindsey, to make this journey by public transportation, you will be changing from a bus to one train system and then to a second train system. Nothing is really seamless here nor can any of it be booked on any one website. First, the bus. It's the SITAsud bus. Here's link to the schedule from Positano to Sorrento. http://www.sitasudtrasporti.it/public/tpl/campania/5070.pdf Once at Sorrento, you take the Circumvesuviana train to Naples Centrale. It's not as nice as the MAX. At Naples Centrale, you go upstairs and take the Trenitalia train to Florence. This last step you can book online at www.trenitalia.com in advance for a possible nice discount. Discounted tickets are non-refundable. Expect the overall journey time to be about 5.5hrs.
another option (not sure about the time of year) could be to take a boat from Positano to Salerno and the train to Florence....if not in the time for boats, you could go the other way too, take the bus to Amalfi, bus to Salerno and train to Florence...
