Fastest way to get from Venice to Rome

We are flying into Venice for a 3 day pre-cruise adventure. We will need to get to the cruise port in Rome (Civitavecchia) for our cruise departure. Any advice on best and fastest way to accomplish this without flying.

High speed train to Rome, change to train to Civitavecchia. Takes about 5 1/2 hours.

Couldn't be easier! Take the Freccia train line from Venice. It will stop briefly in Florence then on to Rome. Fast, comfortable and scenic. From Roma Termini you're on your own - I've never been to Civitavecchia.

Take the train to Rome (Termini) and change to the train to Civit .. It is a short walk or cab ride from the train station to the port entrance. From there a shuttle bus will take you to your ship's check in. I personally would stay in Rome the night before just in case there was some type of rail problem between Rome and Venice. We have boarded four cruises out of Civit... It is easy to do. Civit is roughly an hour train ride from Rome. Last time I checked there were three trains an hour -- more of a commuter run to Civit... The slowest train is about an hour, ten minutes and the fastest is 45 minutes.

Just slightly under four hours from Venice plus another two to Civit --- allows waiting for Civit change, grab a quick sandwich in the station, etc. You can get discount ticket if you buy well in advance.

Just curious...
Are you spending a few days in Venice before heading off to Civitavecchia? I sincerely hope that's the case!

Excellent advice from Frank about spending the night before the cruise in Rome. I personally wouldn't take the risk of traveling Venice> Rome>Civitavecchia the same day the ship departs.

Thanks for the excellent advice everyone! My plan was to spend 3 days in venice before traveling to Rome. Thanks to some of your advice I will be spending 2 days in Venice and heading to Rome a day early as a precaution.

Personally I think that is smart. In all fairness, we have been to Rome six times and traveled all over Italy via train for a good month or more and never had a delay beyond a few minutes. But I still would go the day before. The Hotel Sonya is handy to Termini with an excellent breakfast. Hotel Contilla is just out the south side door. It is across the street from a self service laundry but breakfast is so so. We do use Contilla when it is just one quick night. The area around Termini is busy but it does have some nice restaurants in the area.

Advice is fine. Understand that the Rome cruise port is quite far from Rome and inconvenient, to say the least. There can be a lot of baggage lugging involved. The bus from the station to the port is only half-hourly at best, so you may have a taxi fare. Note that neither the bus nor the taxi (with some few executive-service exception) goes anywhere near the pier. They drop you at the port's proprietary shuttle bus terminal. Make sure you get on the exact bus (luggage beneath) that will go to YOUR ship - perhaps after stopping at another ship. Pay attention.

We used Rick's advice for walking to the port from the train. but it was a sweaty, sunny, breathless adventure, with cobblestones and molded pavers under the luggage wheels. If you can afford it, take a cab.
