We booked our return flight from Rome and are spending our last few days in Sorrento. Our flight is at 1:40 (13:40). What would be the fastest way to get to FCO from Sorrento?
Be sure to take into account the 3 hour wait at the airport; having flown out of Rome twice, I can say from 1st-hand experience that at least 2 hours is needed and 3 is a good idea. That means you need to be at the Rome airport at 10:40am. But the train from Naples doesn't go to the airport, it goes to Roma Termini. So you need to be there in time to catch the 1st airport-bound Leonardo train before 10:10am (since it is a 30 minute ride). That would be the 9:52am Leonardo train.
And this is where the travel friction set in; you can't just step from one link to another. Looking on the trenitalia website you have arrival choices for weekdays (before the schedule change in June) of 9am or 9:15am in Roma Termini. Which means leaving Naples at 7:50am or 8:05am. Which means leaving Sorrento early enough to get to Naples, buy your tix if you haven't bought them in advance once in Italy, and then boarding the train. Which means a 6:25am train from Sorrento to arrive at 7:30, or the 6:55am train to get in at 7:45am.
And all of this depends on no delayed trains. You can probably get this to work, but if it was me I'd stay the last nite in Rome, with only the 9:52am train to catch in Rome after a leisurely breakfast.
edit: the schedule above is based on the published train schedules as of April 2010. The train schedules change seasonally, so times may be somewhat different in the summer or fall.
I would definitely spend the last night in Rome. Because of an unfortunate overcrowding of trains we were required to take the very first early morning Circumvesuviana train out of Sorrento to Roma Termini. I think it pulled out about 5:30 or 6:00. So that meant we had to wake up about 4:00 to get dressed, packed and out the hotel door to our waiting taxi. It just wasn't a very pleasant experience.
Sorrento is a beautiful area and I would recommend spending a few days there. But I would advise against spending your last night there before departing Europe from Rome.
The Circumvesuviana is a private railroad and you will NOT find timetables for its trains on the Trenitalia site. Instead, go here.
I'm with Mike and Tim. Spend your last night in Rome. If you're a victim of Murphy's Law ("If something can go wrong, it will"), you will miss your flight home.
Here is another option which some may prefer:
Depart Sorrento 6:00 a.m. MAROZZI bus
Arrive Roma Tiburtina 9:45 a.m.
Depart Roma Tiburtina 10:03 OR 10:18 (train)
Arrive FCO 10:48 OR 11:03

It's tight (as it's not as FAST), but you avoid the crowded Circumvesuviana commuter train from Sorrento to Naples, then connecting to a fast train to Roma Termini, then connecting to the airport train to FCO!
