fastest way from venice to cinque terra

I'd appreciate some feedback on what is the easiest way to travel from venice july 14th to cinque terra, I know there are several options. My original itinerary was venice, cinque terra, florence, siena, assisi, rome. Though, while trying to get times for trains from treinitalia, I wasn't able to get any information. I'm sure im doing something wrong. Not sure If I should go to Florence first and rest and then go up again to cinque terra, and come back down to Florence?
Or should I go milan instead, visit milan, then go to cinque terra, Florence and continue ...
thanks

You maybe to early to get travel information for July14th.
Also you have to specify which town along the Cinque Terre that you are trying to go to from Venice.
For example Manarola is most southern town along the Cinque Terre and Monterosso the most northern.
Most trains from Venice will require a transfer in Florence on the way to the Cinque Terre. This is the fastest way taking trains.

thanks, for responding, I did enter monterrosso specifically on the train site and still nothing, changed dates, times and nothing.
Will keep trying

another question, while reading rick steve's book I understood that the trains between cinque terre, are only valid for 75 minutes, one direction, are there any other tickets that last a day trip?

Trains are only listed on the website when they are available for purchase. Regional trains can't be bought more than a week or so in advance so you don't see them if you are looking far ahead. The schedules don't change much, so for planning purposes, just use the current week's schedule, choose the day of the week you plan to travel.

The most efficient way is Venice to Florence to the Cinque Terre to Rome. Siena is best by bus (1 hour) from Florence. Many visit as a day trip because the bus stop in Siena is central, the train station is farther away.

angie,

You may not be able to get solutions for 14th July yet, as there will be a schedule change about 11 June. I'd suggest checking solutions for a date before 11 June on the same day-of-the-week that you'll be travelling as that will provide a good estimate of your options.

It would be more efficient to travel Venice > Florence > Monterosso > Siena > Assisi > Rome. Travelling from Venice to the C.T. is pretty well right across the width of the country and will take 4-6 hours. The trip from Florence to Monterosso is fairly straight forward (usually one or two changes at Pisa Centrale and La Spezia Centrale).

Be sure to choose the correct stations in each location, as many cities have more than one.

Regional trains can't be bought more than a week or so in advance

Sorry, but this information is wrong and outdated.
You can buy also regional trains tickets up to 120 days in advance and see the schedules, but only up to the next timetable change. The summer change is on June 11, the winter one on December 11.

You can't purchase regional trains tickets after June 11 now, you'll have to wait till the end of May. It's not a big deal as regionales can't sell out, don't offer discounted tickets and the summer schedule is very similar to the winter one.

You can go from Venezia S. Lucia to Monterosso changing at Milano Centrale. It is a little slower than via Florence and La Spezia, so trenitalia.com doesn't list this itinerary.
Ken is right regarding efficiency, Nevertheless going via Milan has 3 advantages:

  1. You'll have reserved seats all the way from Venice to Monterosso
  2. You'll have to change only once in Milan (a big pro if you don't pack light)
  3. You'll travel on trains that have the right of passage over the Regionales when they are late

Thanks to Milan's staffed luggage deposit, you could also take the metro to Piazza Duomo and see one of the most beautiful gothic Cathedrals in Europe.

I understood that the trains between cinque terre, are only valid for 75 minutes

The regional trains tickets locally purchased are valid only for 75 minutes on regional trains going from A to B. For this reason they must time stamped before getting on, to start the clock. But note that the train line through the Cinque Terre area is the main one connecting Genoa with Rome and that it isn't served only by regional trains.
Don't board an Intercity train calling at Monterosso with a regional ticket, you'll be fined on the spot.

Regional trains tickets purchased on-line can be used on the booked train and on any other regionale within the following 75 minutes. They don't need to be time stamped before getting on.

The train from Venice to the CT takes over 6 hours so you may want to decide if that's worth the visit. You don't say how long you have for your Italy trip but with the stops you have listed you need at least 3 weeks or so.

If you like fast-paced travel you can do this in 14-15 nights, but I agree with Donna that three weeks (or closer to it) would be better.

Thank you all for the help
I think id rather have reserved seats considering its high season
So im going to try the milan route

Do you think spending the night in milan is worth it? Just to break the long trip
Or skip spending the night

I will go florence-sienna-assisi

I certainly wouldn't add another stop to this already overpacked itinerary. Either cut out the CT or just go straight there from Venice. Adding another stop just means less time in both places.
