Does anyone know of the quickest train schedule from Venice to Garmisch? When searching online, I only see routes that take 6 - 8 hours. i do not want to fly. we will be 5 adults. Is there a group discount card for this route? Since this trip will be our longest train trip on our 3 week Italy/ Germany trip, I would like to travel the fastest and least expensive way.
Part of the problem you are liable to have is that the most efficient way to do it is Venice to Munich, then Munich to G-P. That is a 6+ hour train without being a night train, or a 9 hour train as a night train. Then, it's an hour from Munich to G-P, IIRC. There seems to be one train a day and one overnight. Leaving the direct routes to Munich out, gives you a quick run to Padua, then a Padua to Munich train, followed by the Munich to G-P.
An alternate routing goes Venice to Verona to Innsbruck to Garmisch. That's 6 and a quarter, can be booked for $91 per person. I don't think that's too bad, considering it's three countries and 3 trains. Could also be done Venice to Innsbruck, but that's $100 a person, and takes about the same time.
More information might be useful. If you're looking to do the mountain, then you might want to park in Munich, day trip down, then go back to Munich for the night. If you're going to base out of Garmisch-Partenkircken, then arrival time doesn't matter as much.
The short of it is that trains are gonna be the more affordable option, but it can't be done in under 6 hours.
