Hi I'm looking to take the train from Napoli/Naples central station to Salerno via trenitalia on Intercity train that takes around 37 minutes. Does anyone know what side of the train would be best to enjoy the scenery, i.e. most scenic side of train on the way?
Many thanks to anyone that can provide more detail....
The ocean will be on the left side of the train I guess ( west side as you are going south. However I'm not sure that you will know which side is which if you are picking seats ahead of time. I did this train last year, but went further. To be honest, I don't remember how much scenery there really was for that section. You might try the man in seat 61 website, it may give more info.https://www.seat61.com/
Thank you appreciate the info. This route is somewhat south but mostly heading east with the ocean side on the right side of the train and the left side containing sights such as Mount Vesuvius, as the train rounds out the gulf of Naples/Napoli, after that the train heads more inland before going more inland. I checked out seat61 but doesn't really have any info with regards to this route. Worst case thinking about booking left side of train to view inland side, since we will likely do a ferry from Salerno back westward towards amalfi coast heading back in the direction of Naples via ferry by sea.
Seat61 mentions somewhere in the Italy sections that there's no way of knowing in advance which way round is the front so there's also no way of knowing which side will face the ocean which will face the mountain.
You can see the various train routes if you go to Google Maps. Plug in your departure time to see the route your train will actually take.. The fastest trains are inland, so you wont have ocean views of the AC. And because of that inland route your view of Vesuvius should actually be on the right as you head to Salerno.
Hello LetsTravel, and welcome to the forum!
I made this trip several times last year both on the fast train and on the local regionale trains and on an Intercity as well I believe. The good news is you shouldn't worry about it too much because the bad news is it is not a very scenic section of train line. The track loops east out of Naples running inland and around Vesuvius and curving down towards Salerno. The area on the way out of Naples has some good views of the large buildings of Naples business but is pretty much mixed farm and suburban houses for a quite a ways. Vesuvius will be on your right heading southward but once you pass near the volcano a large sections of the track are tunneled. Once you emerge you are very close to Salerno and should start getting ready to get off.
Additionally there is no reliable way to tell the direction of travel when choosing seats on the trains - at least on Trenitalia - and so no way to know which side of the train you are booking on. Again there is good news in that the train probably won't be to crowded and you can just switch sides once you leave Naples if you want to.
Have a great trip,
