Fast train Rome to Florence

We arrive in Rome FCO on a Monday morning and want to travel that same day to Florence by fast train. Reading about the direct train from airport to Termini and saw suggestion to get tickets for the fast train at the airport full service ticket office. Good idea? How long should I allow for travel from airport to termini then to make transfer for train to Florence. Hesitant to buy tickets on line in advance just in case of plane issues or train strike. We have not made that transfer before, but we have used the regional trains on several previous trips.

That is an excellent idea. If you get lucky, you might be able to get the 11:08 train direct to Florence. Otherwise it is a 32 minute train ride to Termini, followed by a 14 minute (generally) transfer time to a fast train to Florence. Trains go from FCO at 27 and 57 past the hour, with a few exceptions. Rome to Florence is an hour and 22 minutes.

Thanks,. Was wondering about the time it took to travel within termini to next track.
Been checking the schedules and of course some
sell out the cheaper seats earlier, skipping a train may allow some down time (less anxiety) and a wc break and catch the next one on economy fare.

Super economy fares are a great deal, however be aware that if your plane is late and you miss the specific train you booked your money is lost as the tickets are non refundable nor changeable. Just to warn you of the risk.

The Leonardo Express comes in at Binario (Track) #24, unless they've changed it. Freccie (fast trains) usually leave from the railhead, not shared tracks, so it takes just a few minutes to get to the track for your Firenze SMN train. Be sure to check the electronic board, sometimes the track # is changed.

Mike,

As the others have noted, the trip from FCO to Roma Termini is ~32 minutes via the Leonardo Express. Note that you MUST validate your ticket prior to boarding the train or risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot! Also note that there are two trains that depart from FCO, the L.E. and the FM1. Be sure to board the correct train or you won't end up at Roma Termini.

YES, it's a good idea to buy your tickets for the Freccia high speed train at the FCO ticket office, or you can also use a Kiosk. The general consensus here is that it's NOT a good idea to pre-purchase tickets to connect with an inbound flight, in case of any issues with flight delays or whatever as you noted. When you purchase your tickets, allow at least 45 minutes from the time of your L.E. departure. You'll need time to disembark from the L.E. and walk to the front of the train and locate your next train. As you may have found on previous occasions, there will be a huge "crush" of people getting off the train, which slows things done somewhat.

We have done this several times and I don't like having to worry about late planes (most of our trips to Europe have come in late in the last 10 years including one that was 5 hours late) We were in 30 minutes early last time we flew to Rome.

The agent at FCO will sell you the Termini-FLorence train ticket you can make which makes the process easier. I'd expect the 32 minutes for the train to Termini and then a half hour for connection; you don't need that if you know what you are doing, but I like a little cushion.
