Farmhouse/villa style lodging in Tuscany or Umbria

Hi,

I will have a car so I'm thinking instead of jumping hotels from Florence - Siena - Assisi - Orvieto why not stay somewhat central and day trip to the sights?
Rick lists the restored farmhouse IL Canto del Sole (http://www.ilcantodelsole.com/index.asp) near Siena which is a great fit but I'd like a few more options.
Don't need lots of fancy amenities like pool, spa etc. Somewhat rustic is OK. Two adults.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Search for an area that is central to the destinations you want to visit and within reasonable driving distance from an entrance to the motorways (some Agriturismi are in the boonies, even requiring driving on dirt roads). So choose your agriturismo carefully using Google Maps to see exact location and also to see the general area you want to be in. If your destinations are Orvieto, Assisi, Siena, Florence, you want to stay not too far from the Bettolle area where the Autostrada A1 and the Raccordo Siena-Perugia meet. From there you are within one hour from any of the above mentioned destinations.

Someone will suggest some names where they stayed in this area (I never have stayed in this area). But otherwise you can use the following websites for some searches:
www.agriturismo.com
www.agriturismo.net
www.agriturismo.it
Also take a look at this German website below. (click on the British flag for English):
www.interchalet.de

Be aware that most agriturismi require a 3-4 nights minimum and many even a min. of 1 week stay especially in summer.

Use Bookings.com. . . great listing of hundreds of villas that provide apartments, most have pools, a large number of them have an on-site restaurant. This leaves you free to spend all day sightseeing and coming 'home' to a place to cool off if in the summer time and have a great meal without worries of driving 'home' from a remote restaurant at night.

For most of the listings, you book your room but can cancel without penalties and pay about 2 weeks prior to your arrival date! Makes it easy to change your mind if you find some other place you'd rather go!

Ciao. . .
