Farm vacation suggestions in the Val d'Orcia area, Tucscany, Italy

My wife and I will be in the Val d'Orcia area for a week in early October, 2009. We would appreciate suggestions re. farm vacations. We would enjoy living at a farm where we could interact with the farm family. Our Italian is very limited, but we speak both Spanish and English. We will have a rented car and plan to take day trips in the area. Thank you ahead of time for any suggestions. Joe Kelly

Joe,
I have always liked La Crociona http://www.lacrociona.com/

Just outside of Montalcino it is convinent for day trips, Sant'Antimo, Pienza, Montepulciano, Siena, Monte Oliveto Maggaiore, etc.

We also very much liked La Crociona--spent six nights there in May. The location is great for day trips in that area of Tuscany. The owners run a small, but busy, winery and stay occupied with the business. The rooms are actually small apartments and they are comfortable and quiet--and very well priced. Be sure to visit the S'Antimo Abbey which dates to the 15th c. A pleasant little town nearby is San Quirico--the old town walls have capers growing on them.

I can't recommend Agriturismo Cretaiole in Pienza strongly enough, but given the late date you may have trouble getting a room. But by all means give it a try...

The Moricciani family is absolutely wonderful. Check out the reviews both on the Italian Agriturismo portion of the Graffiti Wall and on Tripadvisor.com.

I would second the vote for Cretaiole. We're heading back to Italy next year and I can't say enough wonderful things about the Moricciani family. You won't be disappointed.
