Family Trip with kids - Rome and Sorrento/Amalfi - 9 Nights

Hello, asking for some advice/suggestions for 9 night trip with kids (ages 10 and 12) in Sept or Oct.

Arrival at FCO

Rome - 3 nights,
Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi - 5 nights,
Rome - 1 night (departure next day)

We plan on doing sights in a relaxed fashion in Rome for the first 3 days, then head south towards Naples. Plan was to stay in Sorrento for 4 to 5 nights and then return to Rome for one night before we depart for home.

Originally, I wanted to do Rome/Florence/Sorrento, but felt it was too much to jam into 10 days. We want to mix in some relaxation instead of being on-the-go the whole time. I felt that Sorrento was a great place and a good base to be mobile to explore the Amalfi coast, Capri, etc...

Any suggestions for hotel/villa stays for a family of four in Sorrento area?

Is it a good plan to stay there in Sorrento for 5 nights or should we break the trip up into a few different places near the Sorrento/Amalfi area?

Thank you

If you are coming from N.America, you likely will arrive in Rome in the AM, giving you plenty of time to head for your "Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi " destination that day. Then do all your Rome days at the end and save one hotel change and make better use of you time.

Have stayed here, https://ilnido.it/ and really enjoyed it.

I would add one night in Rome to give you 3 full days. We stayed at Hotel Raffaello in Rome when our kids were younger, as they have a Family Room. It was a good location and in the medium price range. I agree with Joe, either head directly south from Rome, or better yet, fly into Naples and out of Rome.

Thank you both for suggestions.

Would Sorrento be a good place to stay for five full days and do day excursions from there to various locations around Amalfi, or would you suggest staying in another city for two nights to get a different experience?

Because of how long it can take to travel in the AC region, I'd stick with Sorrento as a base so you're not wasting half a day moving from hotel to hotel.

You have a good plan. You can see/do a lot with Sorrento as a base. You have so few days, you don’t want to waste them in transit to another hotel.

You could spend the last night in Fiumicino town which is a lovely place to stroll around, eat pizza or seafood and relax. The you take a quick taxi or hotel shuttle the next day to the airport.

Are flights booked?
If so can it be changed?

Fly out of Naples
Rome 4
Sorrento 5

Sorrento is fine as a base
Wouldn’t waste time changing hotels

An alternative to Sorrento is Salerno
( less expensive, not touristy, easy access to AC towns, Paestum, direct trains to/from Rome and Naples)

Flights are pretty much locked in with round trip from the States to Rome.

The difference in cost seemed to be around $1500 total ($325 per person) to get the return flight from Naples rather than round trip from Rome. .

We were looking at Praiano also as an alternative to Sorrento. But any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Praiano doesn’t have a ferry so your transportation would be very limited

If you want to stay ON the AC look at Minori or Amalfi/Atrani
Any village with a ferry

Sorrento is perfectly fine-best transportation hub especially for Pompeii and Capri

Many folks here are staying in Salerno instead of Sorrento. It's not as crowded as the AC towns, and the train connections are easier than getting to Sorrento. I wish we had done that, as getting from Naples to Sorrento is a pain. Have a great trip!

Nothing wrong with Rome roundtrip, but still press on to the coast first and finish with Rome so you don’t have to split the stay. It’s more efficient, if you think the kids can bear it (napping on a train is nice).
APraiano is a place to get away from it all, not convenient for day trips.
