Family Travel to Rome

I have a family of 5 (3 children, my wife and I) that a is planning on traveling to Rome for Christmas. Our children are still pretty young (Ages 3, 6 and 8). We are planning on staying in Rome for 5 to 7 days. We were told a more economical way of experiencing Rome was to rent a flat opposed to getting a hotel room. My question is twofold, (1) Is this a better way for my family to experience Rome? and (2) Does anyone have any recommendations of good websites or a specific property that would be good for our trip?

I totally agree. Our first trip to Rome was spent in an apartment, and it was the best decision we ever made. This is the exact apartment: http://www.vrbo.com/320914 Even though it says it has only 1 bedroom it actually has 1 big bed in the loft, a big fold out couch on the 2nd level and another fold out couch on the 1st level. Of course that was several years ago when we were in the apartment. But the owners are EXTREMELY nice and helpful in every way. They also have another larger apartment which is in the same building and just next door to the one where we stayed: http://www.vrbo.com/305032 It was cheaper than a hotel, and we were able to shop at the market and bring home breakfast foods and drinks to keep in the refrigerator. I highly recommend an apartment for your family.

We've had good luck with cross-pollinate.com and sleepinitaly.com

I agree with sleepinitaly. We actually rented the apartment via sleepinitaly, but we have since found the apartment directly from the owners. Don't know if that affects the price.

I prefer renting apartments to staying in hotels in general (although I don't have kids, I am sure there are a lot of benefits). I have used this company for their Paris apartments with excellent results, very helpful people. Here is there Italian link. http://www.italybeautifulrentals.com/
