Hello! I am looking for suggestions of family rooms in Rome and also Venice (ideally 4 beds and 2 bathrooms), or hotels that may have rooms with 2 beds that are reasonably priced (so we would just book 2 separate rooms). There will be 4 women on this trip (one is 42, the others are in their 60s) that need a place to stay for 2 nights in Rome prior to a cruise that departs from Civitavecchia in mid-May and 2 nights in Venice after disembarking the cruise in Ravenna. We definitely need something with an elevator and air conditioning would be appreciated! Just looking to see the major sites in Rome so centrally located or easily accessible via metro would be great. :) Thank you!
reasonably priced
Better to use a numeric value to get useful results.
Start your search on Booking.com
Use the filters for budget, #rooms/beds, amenities, location
Typically Rome and Venice hotels won’t really offer what you are looking for
Your best bet would be an American style hotel chain
Rome-check Hotel Smeraldo
https://www.smeraldoroma.com/en/
Venice-check Hotel Ala
https://www.hotelala.it/
Both might have rooms that fit your needs (not sure about your budget), both are very well located and both are forum favorites
hey hey Sheena
as joe32F please determine "reasonably" priced. to be honest i really don't feel you'll find what you hope/want in venice.
look on booking.com for 2 separate hotel rooms. on left side are your filters to check what you want. not many have elevators/lifts, what floor and check steps/stairs to climb. many steps/stairs/bridges/uneven pavement/cobblestones pulling luggage. there are vaporettos and water taxis if you don't want to walk. have you been to italy?
ravenna port is about 2 hours to venice (train, bus, shuttle, taxi), check-in to hotels 3-4pm and check out 10-11am. many flights out of venice (VCE) are early early morning (6am) finding transportation at airport that early may cost you. you will have late afternoon, next day to visit venice and check out next day, it's a busy time of year with others doing the same thing you are.
rome will be the same thing, the port is about 1 1/2 hours from rome, reserve a taxi (split 4 ways) to take you all the way to the port. know which berth the ship is docked at, go as close as possible without having to pull/push luggage. what time does your flight arrive to rome, taxi from rank at airport to hotel, remember the check-in times. what are your plans in rome, with the short time you have with crowds, book attractions early at website. late afternoon, next day free time, then check-out next day to get to ship.
you'll love it, while being prepared (europeforvisitors.com) will keep the stress away. keep asking questions, people on the forum here to help you out with suggestions that you decide on. good luck enjoy
aloha
Hello Sheena,
I think we might be on the same cruise. We booked Hotel Delle Nazioni in Rome (near Trevi Fountain) based on reviews and comments of others on this forum. As for the room sizes, I don't know because it's just two of us and we didn't need a big room. And in Venice we booked Hotel Ala also based on reviews and comments from others on this forum. I hope this helps.
Stay in a convent !! In Rome Casa Maria Immacolata, In Venice Istituto San Giuseppe. My wife and I love staying in them. First time we booked thru monasterystays.com, second time directly which is cheaper, but does not have the handholding that monasterystays supplies
Venice one is conveniently located between Rialto and San Marco. Rome one is in Prati, but convenient to 2 Metro stops. Good prices. 4 bed rooms available but that would only have 1 bathroom. 2 bed rooms are the most common type.
No religious requirements to stay there
In Venice you generally need to cross canals as you move around. The bridges are small but usually have 8 steps up and 8 steps down. A few bridges are higher and have more steps. The bridges could be a real challenge if you are traveling with large bags, as many folks do when they take cruises. If you can find a hotel accessible by vaporetto from the train station without crossing a canal, your life will be more pleasant. You can ignore this concern if you'll be traveling with fairly lightweight bags and have no mobility impairments.
Individual vaporetto tickets cost 9.50 euros each, so it often pays off to buy a vaporetto pass. Be sure to validate the pass before walking onto the floating dock for each trip. These are the prices:
24 hours: 25 euros
48 hours: 35 euros
72 hours: 45 euros
168 hours (7 days): 65 euros
Although Rome has a metro, its coverage of the city is fairly thin. Even if there's a Metro station near your hotel, there might not be one terribly close to your sightseeing targets. Often buses work better, though they aren't fast.
Hotel Ala is just steps from the SM Giglio vaporetto stop
No bridges or canals to cross
You will find hotels with a/c and lifts on Lido di Venezia. I stayed at the Hotel Villa Edera and the Cristallo, they both had those features plus breaky buffets. They were about 5-10min walk from the vaporetto stop, all level walking. There were other modern hotels there too and getting to Venice proper was easy with the vaporetto. Hotel Panorama is even closer to the bus stop and is modern as well but I haven't stayed there. They are all close to ristorantes and gelaterias and cafes.
With only two nights in Venice, I wouldn't want to stay out on the Lido. It's very different from the historic center of Venice.
You are not looking for family rooms. Just ask for twin rooms. That will give you two separate beds per room. You are not going to find in a hotel a four bed, two bath set up. A suite in a five-star hotel might give you that unlikely anything less than than 5 star will be a twin room.
