Family of 7 traveling from Switzerland to The Lake Como….need suggesting and help!

We are a family of 7, (2 seniors, 2 adults and 3 children ages 6,8,10) traveling from Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland to Lake Como. We have never been to that area and would like help as to where to stay as there are so many small villages that look beautiful. We will be traveling by train from Lauterbrunnen so any suggestions to what to see and where to stay would be greatly appreciated. We have about 3-4 days before returning home from Milan. Does anyone know of the scenic trains and if they need prior reservations?

I did that trip in reverse two years ago. You might want to reserve the Interlaken-Milan rain tickets ahead of time, as the fares can be cheaper the earlier you book. The journey is about 3 hours and does include some lovely scenery, although you will be going through some very long tunnels under the mountains. You will then take a regional train from Milan to Lake Como. As I recall, that journey had some very scenic portions. We stayed in Menaggio and really enjoyed it, but I know that people really like Varenna as well.

Varenna is a train stop and you walk down hill about seven minute walk to the town,we have stayed two times at the Hotel Olivedo right on the waterfront, instead of their hotel we stayed in the Villa which gives you great views from the terrace of the boats coming and going. You can board the ferry right there and go to Bellagio or any other town on the lake.

You can always specify a route via Kandersteg. That will take you up the mountain and though the old, shorter, Loetschberg Tunnel. That will by pass the faster, newer, and longer Loetschberg Base Tunnel. I'd only do this if the weather was nice that day. You will have to change trains at least one extra time at Brig. It does not add all that much to the overall journey time, but the scenery beats the inside of the Loetschberg Base Tunnel.
