Family of 5 trip to Italy

Please comment on our proposed itinerary - do we need more time in one place or another? Stay in Naples or Sorrento for a pompeii visit? I know we could spend a lot of time in each destination, but i wanted to give the family a survey so we could always come back later. The complication is 3/31 is Easter Sunday so we dedcided to do it this way to avoid being in Rome on Easter Sunday (which I imagine is crazy).

Family of 5. 3 kids, 14, 13 and 10. We've done Portugal, Spain, England, Iceland - these are pretty well traveled kids so far.

We're traveling to Italy in late March. Getting to Rome at noon on Friday 3/22. Plan is to head down to Naples or Sorrento (not sure which one) for Friday night. Then do Pompeii on Saturday (my middle is taking latin and they've done a unit on Pompeii). Stay in Naples/Sorento on Saturday night. Sunday head up to Rome, stay in Rome until Wednesday evening. Head up to Florence wednesday night. Florence/Pisa until Friday. Friday head to Venice, Venice on Saturday and Sunday and fly out from Venice on Monday 4/1.

So:
Friday: Sorrento/Naples
Saturday Sorrent/Naples (day trip to Pompeii)
Sunday: Rome
Monday: Rome
Tuesday: Rome
Wednesday: Rome/transit to Florence
Thursday: Florence - day trip to Pisa and Coast?
Friday: Transit to Venice
Saturday: Venice
Sunday: Venice

Thanks in advance for any pointers!

I would just do Naples. You don't have enough time to enjoy Sorrento and Amalfi to merit going to Sorrento.

Have you been to Florence? If you have not, you don't have near enough time in Florence so I wouldn't go to Pisa or the coast.

You need that entire Thur and Friday morning for Florence. Your kids would probably enjoy the science museum there and it's a great city for walking.

By the time you'd get out of Fiumicino airport on Friday, get into Rome to catch a train to Naples (no trains to Naples from Fiumicino) and then the commuter train to Sorrento (or private driver), the day will essentially be shot...and I'd expect all of you to be shot as well. As you're only allowing 2 nights/1 full day, I'd bunk in Naples to eliminate that last leg to Sorrento.

I'll agree as well that you need the partial day Wednesday and ALL of Thursday for Florence unless you're not interested in what the city has to offer. Otherwise, it makes no sense to stay there if you're going to spend all of your only full day elsewhere?

I'll defer to others who've been to Italy at Easter but I'm guessing you're going to want advance dinner reservations for Easter Sunday dinner and possibly Easter Monday - which is a public holiday - as well.

(Edited: had your gang in Rome at the wrong time!)

BTW...Easter Monday is also a BIG deal (La Pasquetta) so make sure of what is and isn't open as well as potential for shifting time schedules of trains etc.

Thank you all for the feedback. To clarify, we'll be doing Easter weekend in Venice, flying out on Easter Monday (4/1) in the morning from Venice.

I appreciate the feedback on Naples/Sorrento - for this trip we'll stick to Naples.

I know my time in Florence is too short. I could easily spend a whole day at the Uffizi itself, but I also dont want to overwhelm the kids with museums/churches. We're focusing on Pompeii, Rome and Venice. I could skip Florence altogether I suppose, but it seems like a natural stop between Rome and Venice. Any suggestions on how best to split the time to give them at least some highlights to anchor for future travel.

That's the problem with the world. So many places to see, so little time.

For Florence, I would use the RS walking tour in the guide. Go in the places that the kids seem interested in. Some of the sites are free/cheap, so there's really no commitment for how long to stay. Walk along the river. Go up to Piazzale Michelangelo for the golden hour. Go to the Duomo, baptistry, and perhaps do one of the towers.

Same aged kids - we flew into Rome, drove to sorrento, stayed 2(?) nights, did Pompeii then went back to Rome for the rest of our trip. So much to see in Rome - we were there for Easter at the Vatican and highly recommend!
