Hi all - We have saved points for years to go to Italy -and have airlines (booked on points- yea!) and now have some hotel points. We have two weeks scheduled - flying into Milan and out of Rome. While in the US, we've had great luck getting 2 doubles with a rollaway - but I'm really concerned that once we get to our hotels in Italy they won't allow 5 people per room and I don't have enough points to get 2 rooms. Surely other families have found ways to travel on points as well. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!
thanks to both - we may have to be content that we got the flights for free! looking at convents/monasteries/agriturismo
- we love the idea of those type accomodations
When you book rooms in Italy you must tell them how many people in the room. They take the information from everyone upon check-in. If the hotel you are using doesn't have a room big enough for 5 in one room you'll need to book another room. You might want to email them to see what they can work out for you. Donna
Donna is correct, you must book rooms for a certain number of people. It may even be difficult to find hotels that have rooms with 2 double beds and enough room for a rollaway. Your best bet is to call the hotel you are interested in to see if they can accommodate you.
We have stayed at convents/monestaries all over Italy with only 1 disappointment-and that was in San G. We use www.monestaries.com except in Rome were we use www.santasusanna.org; click on "coming to Rome," and they have a list to choose from.
You didn't say what points you are using-I just booked 2 nights at the Hilton Airport at FCO for 48E a night and 20,000 HHonors points per night. If using Membership Rewards from AMEx, you can convert those points to Hilton points if you are a member.
We travel often with our family of 4 to Europe. You might consider hostels. For a group you can often get a private room and it will be cheap, although likely very rustic with bunk beds. Good luck! Kaye

Hi Yvonda, Sorry I can't help you with points, but if the points don't work out you could consider renting an apartment for some of the time. We routinely book apartments for stays of three nights or longer with our family of five - this summer we are going to Berlin and have a lovely apartment booked for 130 euro per night. Way cheaper than getting two hotel rooms, plus we save money since we can do breakfasts and some dinners at the apartment. We've booked some lovely places through VRBO.com - had a farmhouse in Normandy last year which we loved! Good luck!
You may have a hard time using "points" from U.S. sources. So many of those are U.S. chains like Best Western or Holiday Inns. Save your points for the U.S., and go for authentic housing in Europe. I prefer B&B's and more simple housing. Some of our most memorable travel experiences have been staying with families in their homes. In Italy, many restaurants have a few rooms. And, you have the hostel type accomodations too. AirBnB.com, Booking.com and Venere.com are great sources. TripAdvisor is another place to get hotel names and check ratings. Rick Steves' guides are also great. Have a great time on your trip!
